I was lucky enough to be able to e-interview Ammy and visit her new space recently - have a read of our exchange below:
Tema: Congratulations on starting up your new business Brow Witch! How did you decide to start up this particular kind of business?
Ammy: Brow Witch%% started in 2015, during which I was a qualified Makeup Artist of 2 years and was working part-time in an office job at Adelaide Uni. I was also doing makeup for film/photo shoots after hours. I had been looking to pursue the creative side of things but wasn't sure I wanted to do this with Makeup. I came across a Facebook advert for Microblading (a manual form of cosmetic eyebrow tattoo) and was blown away with how different it looked to the traditional cosmetic tattoo I had seen in the past.
Cosmetic Tattoo has come a very long way from the grey and salmon ashy brows and scary lip liner that a lot of people tend to associate with. When the cosmetic tattoo is done properly, it should be very difficult to distinguish it from the real thing. After spending days researching the techniques, I knew it was something I wanted to get into! After convincing my partner to lend me the money for the course, I made my way to Melbourne for training. As soon as I arrived back in Adelaide, I quit my office job and started working at the back of a Hair Dressing salon in Port Noarlunga. I spent 6 months working from home (which was definitely not my thing)! Later, I rented a room for the 1.5 years at Farrago Skin & Body Clinic in Mile End. Whilst Farrago are like family to me, I outgrew the room I was renting and starting looking for a new space to open
Brow Witch in, where I can put my own creative spin on this interesting side of the beauty industry.%%
Tema: What services do you provide through Brow Witch?
Ammy: Brow Witch%% started with Microblading - This is a manual form of cosmetic tattoo (most similar to a stick and poke from the traditional tattoo sense). Since then we have done numerous advanced trainings and now offer:
Machine Brows Services (All lasting up to 18 months)
Nano Brows - Hair Stroke tattoo, designed to mimic natural hairs
Combo - Our most requested service, hair strokes for the front of the brow with a soft natural shading through the tails
Stardust - Soft shading through the whole brow healing to a soft natural diffused effect, hence the name stardust!
Freckle Tattoo (Lasting 1-2 Years) - More popular than you think, natural beauty is super in right now and freckles are one of our hottest treatments
Lip Blush Tattoo (Lasting 1-5 years) - A soft wash of colour over the whole lips designed to enhance one's natural lip shape/colour
Eyebrow Waxing, Tinting & Henna Brows
Eyelash Lifts & Tints%%
Tema: What do you hope your customers to experience through accessing the services available at Brow Witch?
Ammy: When a client books a treatment at Brow Witch
, they are booking a service, not just a treatment. Our cosmetic tattoo clients are welcome to contact us at any point during the healing process with questions or concerns and we aim to respond to everyone asap. Our long-term returning clients often say they wish they had a reason to come back sooner. We aim to enhance one's natural beauty and cut back the time it takes for someone to get ready giving them more time for other things. Most of our clients are busy working women and mums who need as much time as they can get!
Tema: What do you hope will make your business stand out from other businesses that offer similar services in Adelaide?
Ammy: Brow Witch%% stands out because of our
no judgement policy. We have set the standard that our studio will not accept: Homophobia, Ableism, Racism, Ageism, Fatphobia, or Transphobia.
Our services are aimed at everyone regardless of their gender. We aim to be a collaborative workspace supporting other creatives in Adelaide. We are looking to share our space with an amazing Nail Artist, Lash Artist and Clothes Hire brand and want to bring the local art community to our walls by hosting small exhibitions. We will be looking to retail local brands as well and are hoping to stock a few smaller items from local brand
Boreddd Wearable. Our cosmetic tattoo services are Vegan and we will only retail cruelty-free cosmetics and skincare. Most importantly, our studio will be warm, open, inviting and fun - we are a space you can attend in your gym clothes or ready for a night out!%%
Tema: What do you hope to contribute to the beauty industry in Adelaide through Brow Witch?
Ammy: We are a studio that is supportive to the LGBTQIA communities. We aim to merge the worlds of traditional tattoo, art and beauty and offer treatments that are creative and give you an experience, not just an appointment. We want to support other local independent businesses and collaborate with them where possible. We hope to be a place that can offer something a bit different than your standard beauty salon.
Tema: I've never heard of a lip blush tattoo, but I'm intrigued - what is it? How does it work?
Ammy: Lip blush tattoo is a soft wash of colour tattooed over the lips to give you the healed look like that of a tint. It's suited to anyone who wants to enhance the size or shape of their natural lip, change their colour whether it be a candy pink, soft berry or subtle nude. It's also great for covering scars, emphasising the vermillion border for those who have lost it due to fillers or who have patchiness from cold sores.
Tema: How many people work at Brow Witch and what do they do?
Ammy: At this point, we have myself, Lauren who does our front of house and waxing/lash lifts. We have Brenda who offers microblading and are looking to add more members to our team in a few months We are currently in the process of joining forces with a Lash Extensions artist, Nail artist & Clothes hire brand to fill our private rooms.
Tema: How did you score the space that you have for your new business?
Ammy: Believe it or not, Gumtree! We had been looking for a very long time for the perfect city location and when I stumbled across it I know it was the perfect place. Kim who runs Crack Kitchen was very supportive of our vision from day one and we are so lucky to be on top of such a unique and thriving cafe. There is something special about collaborative working spaces and Adelaide does them well.
Tema: Is there anything else that you'd like our readers to know about your business?
Ammy: We want to get to you know and if you think you'd like to collaborate with us, please get in contact. Most of all, we just want to be a fun welcoming place so please feel free to come visit next time you're around Franklin street. We'd love to chat!
If you're looking to revolutionize your beauty game or have been curious about how cosmetic tattooing works, feel free to visit Ammy in her brand new space, which is situated above Crack Kitchen on Franklin Street.
