When you have children, the idea of going out to dinner can be very unappealing. There you are trying to eat your meal and carrying on a conversation with friends, while your child sits at the table, vying for your attention. Imagine then, my delight at finding Brooklands Tavern , where the first thing served is a showbag for children. Filled with colouring in and other activities, the bag keeps your child entertained until they discover that Brooklands Tavern has a playground. Tunnels, slides and climbing fill the playground which is safely enclosed, protected from the weather and your child can be easily viewed at play from any table in the restaurant. The night we went, all tables were filled with families, yet there was only a gentle hum bouncing around the room as the children were either in the playground or hurriedly eating their dinners, rushing to get back into the playground.

So, does the fact that the restaurant caters so well for kids mean that their meals are below average to balance out? Well, let me start with the garlic bread. I believe the quality of a restaurant's garlic bread, makes or breaks their menu. I found the garlic bread crunchy, tasty and garlicky, probably a rating of 7 out of 10 in my judgement.

There is a wide selection of typical Australian restaurant choices, ranging in price from about $20. They are fairly pricey for what you are served but in my experience, most Perth restaurants do tend to overprice their meals. I had the cannelloni which was a nice, light meal. It was tasty, albeit overcooked. My husband polished off his usual steak and was impressed that when he asked for medium rare, it actually came cooked in that state.
Seldom does my garlic bread score rating fail my overall judgement of a restaurant. I found that a 7 reflected the rest of the menu – a nice, restaurant with a good standard of food. Although, I think bonus points should be awarded for how they cater for children.

For those people who do not have children, is it a restaurant for you? I would say yes. The provision of child entertainment means that your dining experience is not negatively affected by screaming, running kids. Alternatively, Brooklands Tavern also provides a pub-type setting on the other side of the wall. It is a nice classy pub, neat, tidy and you can order pub meals.

Brooklands Tavern offer different specials depending on the night of the week you go and it is worth checking out their website to find exactly what is on offer. A bonus for those budget conscience parents is Tuesday nights where children eat free with the purchase of a main meal.

Brooklands Tavern is a very presentable restaurant, providing an open plan, clean, fresh dining experience.
