Food is always a good way to begin any beach day. I feel like I need the fuel because no matter how much or how little I do, the beach inevitably renders me exhausted. If you are thinking of heading down to the beautiful little Bronte beach, I suggest making the rustic cafe Bronte Carlo your starting point.

The feeling of a beach home engulfed us from the moment we walked in. The open room layout allows the balmy coastal air to follow you inside and its location allows a great view of the ocean to be admired. Added to this is the very warm welcome received from the staff. With friendly smiles they handed us menus that only complicated the choice on what to order; we already had fabulous looking specials flooding the boards, and sweets teasing us from behind glass to decide from.

The menu consists of traditional breakfast and lunch dishes, as well as dishes with an exotic middle-eastern twist (like the 'blata', aka bacon, lettuce, tomato, turkish bread, and aioli mayonnaise). Some tasty vegetarian dishes are also available (the bruschetta sounded interesting as it included lettuce, avocado and pine-nut pesto in addition to the standard tomato topping). I should warn you too, expect to be tempted by a lovely selection of coffee, milkshakes and freshly squeezed juices.

A friend of mine ordered a decadent-looking cheeseburger; jam packed with the meat patty, cheese, tomatoes, onions and lettuce. I initially set my mind to ordering the potato wedges having craved them for a while. I felt a little upset to hear they had run out of this, but was soon excited when their bacon and egg roll ($10) tickled my fancy. This was also one generous meal. Many tasty pieces of bacon, and a couple of sunny-side up eggs were incorporated into a nicely presented roll. I added a bit of barbecue sauce and went on to enjoy every bite of this sweet and salty breakfast classic.

We can say that the meals at Bronte Carlo are expected to be very satisfying, making this colourful cafe a fantastic place to pit-stop on the way to Bronte beach. Once you are all fueled up from your meal (and/or stocked up on the tasty to-go food), enjoy a short and scenic walk down the hill to the beach.
