Two comedies, including a world premiere, are a painting quite a different picture of Marie Antoinette and Cinderella at Floreat's Playlovers Theatre in the upcoming FRINGE WORLD Festival 2015.

Both 40-minute shows are written by Yvette Wall and directed by Alida Chaney, who set up Out of the Bag Productions to work with a variety of performers on new and established works and help to bring the talents of many gifted individuals to the fore.

The pair have already had success with The Broken Slipper, winning a plethora of awards at the 2014 Dramafest, and decided to give it another outing. [FYI: Dramafest is the annual state drama festival and the show picked up gongs for best new writing, director and overall production].

So what's it all about? The black comedy sees Cinderella facing the Fairytale Tribunal after breaking the rules by not marrying Prince Charming. It also features Red Riding Hood's grandma, a menopausal Snow White and Hansel and Gretel's wicked witch. As Cinderella's fate is decided, he breaking of rules becomes infectious.

Yvette says: "I don't always like playing by the rules myself. As someone who married, divorced and remarried my husband, 'to thine own self be true' is my favourite saying – within reason of course.
"Through the dramatic antics of these wonderful fairytale characters, we see the appeal of living happily ever after but at what price?"

Alida was keen to direct The Broken Slipper and, after its first wave of success, people kept suggesting to her that it be part of FRINGE WORLD.
"The play is already tried and tested and I've concentrated a lot on visual physicality and total ridicule to make it even more humorous," she says. "But it's not all about humour – there's a very powerful message in the dialogue, which came across to everyone who previously saw it.
"I was very lucky in casting the play, bringing some very strong actors in to portray each role extremely well."

Building on The Broken Slipper's success, Yvette and Alida decided to collaborate on another show for FRINGE WORLD and came up with the historical romp A Piece of Cake, which will have its world premiere in February.

The comedy features a defiant Marie Antoinette spending her last days in a rat-infested prison cell with a Catholic peasant girl an old witch. The trio forms an unusual connection and a surprise royal visitor causes the plot to thicken. Let's just say cake is eaten and heads may roll…

Yvette says she has had a lifelong fascination with Marie Antoinette and how she's portrayed in popular culture.
"She is the girl, the queen, the disgraced and the beautiful woman, portrayed as tragic and hilarious, making her a character of reality and fantasy," she said.

Alida adds: "The play touches on the more serious side of Marie Antoinette's arranged marriage at the tender age of 14 to King Louis XVI, when she was sent from her homeland of Austria. But generally it's a very tongue-in-cheek romp that should evoke a giggle or two from the audience.
"The biggest challenge is allowing the humour to carry the piece while making sure the pathos and ultimate message doesn't get lost amid the laughter and gags. I have hand-picked a great cast, which helps a great deal. I know that I can give strong direction to each of them without their questioning anything."
