Broken is the sixth instalment in Kelley Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld series and it is a riveting and action-packed addition to the series. The novel follows the story of Elena Michaels, a werewolf who is now the Alpha of her pack, as she struggles to keep her pack safe from a dangerous threat.

Half-demon Xavier calls in a favour owed to him by Elena - steal Jack the Ripper's From Hell letter away from a Toronto collector who had himself stolen it from the British police files. It seems simple, but in the process, Elena accidentally triggers a spell placed on the letter which opens a portal into the nether regions of Victorian London. With thieving vampires, killer rats and unstoppable zombies on the loose, Elena and the Pack must find a way to close the portal before it is too late. To add to the confusion, Elena herself is pregnant with Clay's child (actually twins).

One of the strengths of Broken is the way in which Armstrong continues to develop the world and characters she has created in the previous novels. The attention to detail and world-building add depth and richness to the story, making it feel both believable and immersive. The character development is also strong, with Elena and the other characters continuing to grow and evolve in interesting and engaging ways.

The plot of the novel is fast-paced and action-packed, with a number of different storylines that all tie together in a satisfying way. The main focus of the novel is on Elena's attempts to protect her pack from a dangerous new threat, which requires her to team up with an unlikely ally. The tension is high throughout the novel, with the stakes being not only the lives of Elena and her pack but also the future of the supernatural community as a whole.

One of the strengths of Broken is the emotional depth of the story. Elena's struggles with her new role as Alpha, as well as her ongoing challenges with her relationship with her mate Clay, add a layer of complexity and depth to the story. The exploration of the different types of love, including the love between friends and family, is also well-drawn and adds an emotional richness to the story.

Another theme that is explored in Broken is the idea of power and responsibility. Elena is faced with the difficult task of balancing her responsibilities as Alpha with her responsibilities to her loved ones, and the novel explores the challenges she faces in trying to do so. The exploration of power dynamics within the supernatural community is also well-crafted, with the novel delving into the ways in which power can be both a force for good and for evil.

Armstrong's writing is engaging and well-crafted, with vivid descriptions and well-drawn characters. She has a talent for creating complex and nuanced stories that explore important themes in a way that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. Her attention to detail and world-building also add a richness to the story, with the supernatural world she has created feeling both believable and immersive.

In conclusion, Broken is a thrilling and emotionally resonant addition to the Women of the Otherworld series. Armstrong's well-crafted world-building, engaging characters, and gripping plot come together to create a complex and nuanced story that explores important themes of power, responsibility, and love. The tension builds throughout the novel, culminating in a satisfying and action-packed conclusion that leaves readers eager for the next instalment. Overall, Broken is a must-read for fans of the series and for those who enjoy well-crafted supernatural and urban fantasy novels. It is a compelling and well-crafted story that is sure to leave a lasting impression.
