In this instalment, Will Trent of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is sent to the small town of Grant County, where he becomes embroiled in an emotionally charged investigation that reintroduces Dr. Sara Linton, a central figure from Slaughter’s earlier Grant County series. Lena Adams: Lena Adams is one of the most controversial characters in Slaughter’s universe, and in Broken, her actions and motivations come under intense scrutiny. Lena was present at the scene when Tommy Braham was interrogated, and her role in his death is a central focus of the investigation.

Lena's past actions, including those that led to Jeffrey’s death, make her a source of anger and mistrust for Sara. However, Lena is not simply a villain. Slaughter paints her as a deeply flawed but human character who has made catastrophic mistakes. Her defensive attitude and tendency to cover up her errors only make things worse, but beneath her tough exterior, she carries guilt and shame. Slaughter’s ability to create complex, flawed characters and explore their emotional depths is one of the novel’s strengths.

The novel deepens the relationship between Will and Sara while shedding light on the unresolved tensions from the Grant County series.
