Outside the Jukebox is a popular Brisbane-based artist-run group that puts together innovative performances using many of your favourite songs. They are back in April with Broadway Bingo which combines a randomised performance of songs with the game of bingo. As always, they are taking something we all know and love and doing something completely different, and probably super fun as well.

About Outside the Jukebox

This vocalist group creates both mainstage performances and also puts together bespoke performances for events. I have seen 2 of their performances, with the last one being a Christmas-themed show that combined performances with optional cocktails. It was one of the best Christmas performances of 2023, and certainly something different to the normal Carols by Candlelight.

Merry Mixology by Outside the Jukebox

The first performance I saw of theirs was %%Mixtape: Rewind to the 80s% where they created a story around 1980s songs, with it working as a mystery with the songs being clues to people's lives from that period of time. They used the songs and their interpretations of them to explore feelings, fears, joys and hopes, bringing the audience with them in the exploration, while also being a lot of fun and very entertaining.

About Broadway Bingo

So most people know how to play bingo and many people will be familiar with novelty bingo games where you cross off random things, like wedding bingo might have squares like "Best man delivers speech at reception while drunk." or "Uncle who can't afford a suit borrowed one from a friend that is 2 sizes too small" and things like that. So Broadway Bingo works the same way as regular bingo, in the sense that songs are randomly drawn out of a barrel like in the regular number bingo as well as novelty bingo such as ticking off things like "An audience member cries."

Getting to the Brisbane Powerhouse
Located by the Brisbane River at the river end of New Farm Park, the venue is easy to get to with plenty of parking in the area, plus multiple buses that stop at the park, and a ferry terminal. You can also jump on an electric scooter or bicycle and make your way to the venue that way.

Before & After the Show

The Powerhouse has two restaurants on-site, including Mary Mae's on the ground floor and Bar Alto, for drinks and Italian food, upstairs. There are also several venues on the other side of New Farm Park, but of course, there are lots of nice restaurants nearby in Fortitude Valley. You can even have a picnic in the park before the show, and you can legally drink in the park. Then of course, after the show, you will find plenty of places open for a drink afterwards up in the Valley.

Outside the Jukebox is about mixing all your favourite songs together but in ways that you don't expect, reinterpreting them at times and reimagining them at others, but not being scared to just perform them in the classic way. Here is a group that is passionate about music and songs, and of course attracts an audience that also shares this same passion.
