Life writes the best stories – both the opening night and the closing night movie of the British Film Festival are great examples of this. The festival will kick off on 27 November with
One Chance, the story of British tenor Paul Potts, the shy winner of Britain's Got Talent.
Philomena, the closing night film, is the true story of a mother searching for her long lost son. After falling pregnant as a teenager 50 years ago, Philomena was forced to give her baby up for adoption. Together with journalist Martin Sixsmith (Steve Coogan, Venice Film Festival Award for Best Screenplay) she sets off on a journey to find her son.
Tickets to the opening night include the entrance fee to the official after party and cost $55 (general admission). The closing night ticket includes a pre-film reception with live entertainment and drinks and costs $35.
Those who would just like to catch a movie have plenty of other films to pick from between 28 November to 8 December. Examples are
Good Vibrations, the chronicle of a Belfast record-store owner, and
Still Life, an award winning comedy/ drama about a council worker whose job it is to find the relatives of people who have passed away alone.
The film festival will also screen a number of British classics such as
The Third Man,
Brief Encounter and
Lawrence of Arabia.
Brief Encounter will also be screened as part of a high tea event.
Ticket prices are $19.50 for adults and $16.50 concession, with discounts for movie club members. 5 film passes are also available. Movies will be screened at Palace Centro, 39 James Street, Fortitude Valley.
