One of my colleagues is adamant that the best meals are always from country pubs. She said on the weekend she likes to drive around looking for good hearty pub meal.

I have to admit that I thought I would be having lunch at a little run down pub with uneven verandah, dodgy foundations and carpets that smelt like beer. I was wrong - the Britannia hotel was established in 1857 but recently renovated. They have outdoor dining areas, bar meals, lounge area and playroom.

I was very pleasantly surprised that the Carisbrook pub was modern and had very efficient, friendly staff. We were greeted by name but I'm not sure if this says more about the staff or clients.

We had rung through our order to avoid downtime at lunchtime and within minutes of arriving our food was delivered fresh and hot.

At least one of my assumptions about country pubs was right and that is that the meals were very large. In fact, I would say I have never seen a fish that was any bigger than that served today. I ordered a vegetarian risotto, which was chock full of olives, fresh basil, sun-dried tomatoes and garnished with freshly grated cheese.

It was impossible to get through the amount of lettuce in the Caesar salad ordered by another colleague. I noticed that she had a special order with several adaptations on the traditional recipe and that this was fully catered for.

Another colleague ordered the Chicken Parma, which must be from a very well fed country chicken because it was the thickest Parma I have ever seen. He commented that this was his favourite dish. He ate all the salad and chips first and left the Parma until last.

The Britannia hotel provide a specials menu, for example on Thursdays they have a $15 lunch and dinner menu for chicken schnitzels with multiple toppings to choose from. On Wednesday nights they have a range of pizzas from $10 to $15 also available through bistro hours

Where is Carisbrook? If you're driving from Melbourne, it's about half an hour past Castlemaine and before Maryborough.

The Carisbrook hotel is located in the Main Street off the main through Road. If you were travelling to Maryborough it would be worth your while to detour a hundred metres for a large affordable meal.
