A place for British expats to take a trip down memory lane
Britain on the Bayside is located in Birkdale and sells a huge range of British groceries, confectionery, memorabilia, football goods, gifts, toys and clothing. When I walked into the shop it was like taking a trip back into my childhood. After living in Australia for the last seven years I had forgotten about the branded British goods that were part of my everyday life in England.
The confectionary was a feast for my eyes. I remembered the Sunday afternoons as a child when my Nan used to give my brother and I thirty pence to spend at the corner shop on sweets (lollies). We had to be sure to get there before 1pm because that was when the shop closed and nowhere else was open. Britain on the Bayside has Drumsticks, Sherbet Dips, Poppets, Refreshers, Fruit pastilles, Munchies, Whispers, Revels, Double Deckers (I loved them), Polos and Fruit Polos, remember them? They even have Blackpool Rock! These are just some of the sweets you can buy.
Lots of Sweets to Choose From
I even got excited about the grocery section. Bisto (Aah Bisto!), Daddies Sauce, Branston Pickle and Paxo. The memories of Sunday roast dinners were making my mouth water.
Britain on the Bayside also sells chilled British foods such as Red Leicester cheeses, Lincolnshire sausages, Gammon steaks, haggis, faggots in gravy, Cornish pies and black pudding. I was so happy to see Wensley's Pork Pies.
Now lets talk about crisps (chips). Remember Quavers, Wotsits, Monster Munch and Squares? I had to buy a bag of Skips when we visited. I used to have these every Sunday after my dad had taken my brother and I to the swimming baths. Fond memories and family traditions were coming back to me everywhere I looked. This was such an exciting shopping experience.
I left the shop with a warm glow in my heart after going on a trip down memory lane. With Jelly Tots, Fruit pastilles, Skips and liquorish rolls in my bag I was a happy customer. I may not get back to visit England as often as I'd like but its great to know that I don't have to miss out on those yummy treats from the other side of the world.
