Bristol has long been a bastion of supreme music and stand out venues. Even revered artist Banksy has adorned the streets of Central Bristol with his artwork, much loved by this cultural community. The underground scene has evolved from distinct collaborations between artists and musicians and really shaped this city.
Emerging onto this scene is indie rock \ grunge band Empty Haven. A four-piece outfit comprised of Will (rhythm guitar and vocals), Carter (lead guitar), Bav (bass guitar) and Jonathon (drums). They recently chatted to me about what the scene is like in Bristol and what they're working on at the moment.
For Australian audiences that haven't heard of you, can you describe who are you, what style of music you're into and how long you've been doing it for?
Our sound is an odd one, with influences from both sides of the Atlantic, especially the Seattle scene in the early 90s, but also some classic British rock elements and more modern stuff like Arctic Monkeys and Royal Blood (the latter you all should definitely check out).
Basically, gritty guitars with monster riffs, copious amounts of distortion, killer basslines and drums that are about as punchy as they can get without breaking the kit every show.
I watched the cover of Frances Farmer on Youtube:
Oh yeah, that was our rhythm guitarist and singer Will larking about after school one day (who has since cut his hair and got 1000x better).
Do you think you guys will put up more covers or originals?
Covers wise, we have a bunch of material that we could upload, the only real issue is time to upload and the best times to get the maximum amount of coverage
What's in the pipeline music wise? I can see you've been doing some gigs in Bristol.
At the moment we are currently in process of recording a demo/single/EP, which, when finished, will be our debut, we're just trying to find the right balance to make it a hit, as we love performing and it would mean the world to us if we could do this for a living.
And yeah, we have been playing a few shows and have been receiving offers to play quite a lot, in fact on the 23rd of April we're playing a show in Kingswood at The Royal Archer, and we'll upload a bunch of that footage to our Facebook page herehttps://www.facebook.com/EmptyHaven
Tell us what the scene is like over there for the type of music you play.
In Bristol the music scene is nothing short of brilliant.
I'd say we're incredibly lucky being here, as there is so much opportunity for every single genre, from thrash to rap to jazz and soul and everything under the sun, and the live venues these bands play in are full of character, be it the hectic mayhem of The Fleece or basement rock clusters in The Exchange.
Take our word for it, anything can happen here with a little time and the right exposure. At the moment though, I'd say that the rock and roll resurgence is spearheaded here.
Tell me about the name 'Empty Haven', any significance?
Originally, we were called The Switch, which was cool and all until we searched and realised we had no hope of standing out from the crowd, no matter how unique our sound was.
So, one day, we all just sat in our practice room hurling ideas at each other in between takes for a demo of our song Little Island (which will maybe possibly be put up on Youtube if we do a rough take to tease you all) and after numerous suggestions stumbled upon the name Empty Haven.
There is a load of significance to it, but we want people to infer it for themselves and how significant it is to them, because ultimately our sound will be connected to that name. If we told you it'd spoil that significance, so figure it out for yourselves.
