I'm a grandmother, a retired teacher, an avid reader who loves historical re-enactment, English Country Dance, writing and Op Shopping. My business www.StepIntoHistory.com.au is designed to help children experience history through school incursions.

Shop Without Cash
Are you sick of not being able to afford things? Perhaps when you need a massage most is when you don't have the money for it. You bought a bargain bed but by the time you find someone to deliver it, it's no longer a bargain.

One way of beginning to solve this cash shortage is to join LETS. Local Energy Trading System. Instead of cash, members trade in currency called Units. This means you can access goods and services you couldn't normally afford.

Members are also often people who are concerned about our environment. When I was a member years ago I met some very interesting people and really enjoyed the social aspect as much as the trading.

In fact, I drove past my old house recently and there is the frangipani I received from long time LETS member Marg. She was extending her house and wanted a home for her tree. It is still flourishing after 15 or so years.

Here is the LETS Frangipani.

Brislets is not a huge group, but obviously the more people who join, the more we all benefit. Everyone has something to offer. Do you have excess plants? Can you teach something? Instead of a garage sale, offer goods to LETS members. Perhaps you can knit or offer help with heavy lifting. You might have a ute to hire. Can you petsit or babysit?

Some of the things I'm planning to buy are home grown lemons, a heater and some hummus. I'm also inquiring about reflexology and cleaning.

Lovely home grown lemons.

Once you join, you will have access to the list of members and their offers. Additionally if what you need isn't listed, you can post a "Want'. To be a member you must offer something yourself.

Regular trading days are held monthly so you can meet people as well as buy and sell goods.

Trade days monthly.

Brislets is a non profit organisation run by an elected committee. The site keeps track of transactions just like a bank. They also have a Facebook page.

Many areas have these local networks. See www.communityexchange.net.au

Remember it's only $20 to join. What do you have to lose?
