Achtung. Those seeking a German experience won't have to go very far this October, when Brisbane celebrates all things Bavarian: beer, bratwürste, and brezelns (pretzels). If you're still hungry for more, Brisbane has a number of German restaurants dishing up genuine German cuisine. And in April, the Audi Festival of German Films arrives.

[SECTION]Oktoberfest[/SECTION]


The original Oktoberfest dates back to 1810, when the citizens of Munich were invited to help celebrate the October wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. More than two hundred years later, this festival is celebrated around the world.

Brisbane's biggest Oktoberfest at the RNA Showgrounds (Bowen Hills), now in its fifth year, will celebrate over two weekends: October 12 to 14 and October 19 to 21. Brisbane's original Oktoberfest occurs at the Brisbane German Club (East Brisbane), opposite The Gabba. Rejoice with German beer, food, dancing, music, and more. This year's festivities take place on Friday, October 5 from 6pm, and Saturday, October 6 from 2pm. Tickets cost $10 for non-members or $5 for members. They don't take bookings, so get there early.


The Bavarian Bier Cafe (Eagle Street Pier) kicks off their Oktoberfest with 'The Ceremonial Tapping of the First Keg' on Friday, September 21, followed by these exciting events. Kids can make their own dessert pretzels every Sunday during Oktoberfest, from 10am until 2pm.

The 'real Oktoberfest' Oktoberfest Feinschmeckerabend, hosted by bier expert Matt Kirkegaard, is a three-course tasting evening complemented with premium Pure Biers. This event will be held on Thursday, October 18. Tickets cost $50 per person.

Ladies don your dirndl, lads your lederhosen. Costumes are encouraged for The Alpine Party, on Saturday, October 27. Get together with a group of friends for a fun night of live music, German snacks, and bier. Tickets cost $20 per person.

Brisbane's premier craft beer bar and bistro, #nogo ">The Archive Beer Boutique (West End), will host a one day Oktoberfest on Sunday, September 30; with German craft beer and a German inspired menu.

The Watermark Hotel (Spring Hill), the official Oktoberfest hotel, has a Stay and Play package including accommodation, buffet breakfast, free parking, and tickets to Oktoberfest from $160 per night. Dine at the hotel's restaurant, 551 Restaurant and Bar, to sample some German specialities.


The Black Forest Restaurant (Highgate Hill) will celebrate Oktoberfest from September 28 until October 28, with a special Oktoberfest menu and Erdinger Oktoberfest beer served in steins. Be entertained on Fridays and Saturdays with their two man Oktoberfest Band, the Alpenrosen Dance Group, and the Bell Ringing Ladies.

[SECTION]Genuine German Cuisine[/SECTION]


The Bavarian Bier Cafe (Eagle Street Pier) is one of Brisbane's best German restaurants. The following restaurants are also reknown for their authentic German fare.

The German Sausage Hut offers genuine German sausages, sauerkraut, and freshly baked pretzels. You can enjoy their homespun food and German beer from Monday to Friday at the German Sausage Hut 'Imbiss', located in Burnett Lane (CBD). Every Friday night is Pork Hock Night. You will also find them at these weekend markets: Jan Powers, Chandler, Michelton, and West End.

Bavarian Blue (Wellington Point) offers authentic cuisine created by chef/proprietor Eddy Lithardty. Try the wiener schnitzel (pork fillet schnitzel), kasseler (smoked marinated pork loin), or Bavarian goulash (casserole).

Zum Kaiser Restaurant at the Brisbane German Club (East Brisbane) is open six days a week, serving up traditional German fare such as pork knuckle, sauerbraten (beef pot roast), and frikadellen (rissoles).


For authentic German cakes, pastries, pretzels, and breads, look no further than the King of Cakes . Master Chef Wolfgang Kelke uses recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation. Try his hazelnut gugelhupf, cinnamon stars, or Black Forest torte. They also sell a range of imported items from Germany: coffee, chocolates, mustards, and more. You can order online or visit one of their bakeries (Graceville and Taringa).
