Growing up in Canada, a bilingual country with both English and French as official languages, I was fortunate enough to experience several French immersion trips during my school years.



It occured to me that it would be possible to relive my youth and immerse myself in French culture right here in Brisbane.

The Alliance Française , originally founded in Paris in 1883, is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting French language and culture outside of France.

The Alliance Française de Brisbane, which has been teaching French in Brisbane since 1926, proudly promotes a number of French cultural events throughout the year: The French Film Festival , Fête de la Musique , and The Brisbane French Festival , to name a few.


In addition to showcasing the best of French cinema at the Film Festival, The Alliance Française screens French movies (with English subtitles) on the last Friday of every month at 5:30 pm. Entry to the Ciné Club is free.

After the movie, dine at one of Brisbane's fabulous French restaurants. Two that have been reviewed recently by Weekend Notes writers include Piaf Bistro (South Bank) and C'est Bon Restaurant Française (Woolloongabba).

Besides their fantastic food, the French are famous for their delectable desserts. Brisbane has a superb selection of French patisseries including Belle Époque (Fortitude Valley) and French Twist (Petrie Terrace).



If you're a fan of French macarons, I have discovered some of Brisbane's best at Marché du Macaron, Authentic French Macarons, and Twist n' Roll (Rocklea).

Of course, you don't have to speak French to experience and enjoy any of the above, but it does make the event especially fun.
