Every year, the Brisbane Writers Festival hosts a wonderful selection of authors in the Word Play program. Traditionally, Word Play has been targeted at Primary and Middle school students. But this year, the Brisbane Writers Festival presents a special Senior school program on Friday 5 September. Catering for Year 11 and 12 students, the venues have been chosen with more mature audiences in mind. Seniors get a taste for their future on campus at Brisbane's two major universities: The Cube at QUT and the UQ Art Museum.

Geek out at the Cube is aimed at students of Science, Film and IT. John Pickrell, science writer and editor of Australian Geographic magazine, will interact on all things science with Sean Williams, science fiction and fantasy author; and Christy Dena, recipient of Australia's first Digital Writing Residency at The Cube. As you walk into The Cube, it is impossible to escape the Physics Playroom where visitors can entertain themselves with simulations of physics concepts and experiment with the laws of physics. Pièce de résistance at this venue is an interactive two-storey wall consisting of 190 square metres of high-definition screens.

Conflict consists of three engaging history sessions that will appeal to students of Modern History as well as those studying Visual Art. The program includes a guided tour with the curator of the exhibition Conflict: Contemporary responses to war, which shows themes of war in art since September 11. Author Morris Gleitzman is joined by a stage actor to present a dynamic and touching performance on the role of the Australian Light Horse. David Hunt, historical consultant and comedy writer, talks with great humour about his debut novel Girt: The Unauthorised History of Australia. Jackie French, National Children's Laureate for 2014–2015 and author of many history books such as Hitler's Daughter, is certain to entertain the audience with her vast knowledge of historical facts.
This is a great opportunity for senior students to connect with Brisbane universities, learn about science and art and rub shoulders with some of Australia's best-known authors. Students will discover how history and art go hand in hand and that being a geek is actually pretty cool. At just $21 for three sessions it is great value for a full day excursion themed specifically for senior student interest groups.
