One of Queensland's premier water races will set sail in 2024 with the 76th Brisbane to Gladstone yacht over the Easter long weekend.
The starter gun will fire (traditionally by the Governor of Queensland) on Friday 29 March 2024 to get the race underway to see a spectacle of yacht cruise towards Moreton Bay to take on the 308 nautical mile sailing challenge. The race takes some 47-48 hours.
The boats follow the course in the B2G from its start in Bramble Bay near Sandgate, then head past Redcliffe and then across the bay towards Tangalooma and into the North-West Channel passing the Sunshine Coast, K'Gari and Lady Elliott Island as they make their way to Gladstone,
The first Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race race was held during Easter 1949 with a total of seven vessels two of which carried radios while Brisbane's Homing Pigeon Club supplied pigeons to the others for position reporting. The race now attracts significantly more entrants from across Australia and internationally.
To see the impressive display of yachts and watch them battle through the waters in an attempt to win the race, you can head to one of the vantage spots (like Sandgate and Redcliffe) to see the flotilla. My suggestions include Flinders Parade walkways and parks at Sandgate, the Shorncliffe Pier and Baxters Pier at Shoncliffe as well as the foreshore at Redcliffe.
