It may not be Broadway or London's West End, but Brisbane's theatre scene is thriving in a number of small (and some not-so-small) theatres across the city. From cabaret to ballet, one-man shows to ensemble productions, Chekhov to Shakespeare, there are a thousand stories being told on Brisbane stages tonight.

At the QUT Gardens Theatre you'll find a combination of professional and student productions. The performances range from dance showcases to Shakespearean drama to classic Australian theatre. Facilities include free parking, a bar and a pre-show dining arrangement with Augustine's on George.

Metro Arts, in the city, is much more than just a theatre; it also houses galleries, studio and rehearsal spaces, a restaurant and a bar. As stated on the website: "Metro Arts challenges independent artists to create new works which bust through genres and break up artforms". The Metro Arts program is extremely diverse, with a focus on innovation and experimentation.

The Geoffrey Rush Drama Studio, or the Cement Box Theatre as most UQ alumni will remember it, features the works of The University of Queensland's drama students. But, don't be put off by the thought of amateur theatre, many a successful artist has tread these boards: it got its name for a reason.

These are just a few of Brisbane's many small theatres, where the performances cater to a varied audience, and are constantly changing. It's time to inject some culture into your weekend.
