Australia's biggest street art festival returns to Brisbane in 2019 bigger than ever, with a program double the size of the offerings in 2018. The Brisbane Street Art Festival will take place in May throughout Brisbane CBD and surrounding suburbs.

Street art is a dynamic art form that is exhibited, usually temporarily, in public spaces. No longer confined to murals and graffiti, street art includes posters, sculptures and even yarn bombing. Street art has long shed its reputation as 'vandalism' and has been used for protest, public commentary, or just ornamentation.

The Brisbane Street Art Festival celebrates the vibrant street art scene in the River City, with nearly 50 commissioned artworks, dozens of events, and guests from Brisbane, Australia and overseas.

The festival kicks off Sunday, 5 May with a launch party at Felons Brewing Co (Howard Smith Wharves), a free event offering music and live art demonstrations against the backdrop of the Brisbane River. Book-ending the festival is a pop-up rooftop studio at Toombul Shopping Centre on 17 May to mark the end.

The line-up in between will feature all aspects of street art, including:

a series of exhibitions, showcasing street art in galleries and in its natural environment.

live mural paintings by Brisbane artist Sofles and dozens of other artists.

workshops and masterclasses on various forms of street art.

And this year's festival is more diverse than ever, with female networking events, the Digi Youth Arts 'where we stand' indigenous program, and Brisbane's first installation from Northern Territory artist Hafleg.

The festival runs through May, with a mix of free and costed events. Check out the website for more information.
