The greatest playwright in history will be airing his sonnets of love this weekend at the Roma parklands.

4MBS are hosting The Brisbane Shakespeare Festival with one of the Bard's most famous yet tragic tale of star-crossed lovers in Romeo and Juliet, interestingly this is the play from which the phrase originates perhaps you can listen for the many more coined phrases during the performance directed by Xanthe Jones.

Each of the three days has a multitude of things to do to get you into medieval mode before the play:

FRIDAY
4pm LIVE MUSIC WITH THE BRISBANE MONTEVERDI ENSEMBLE

Hear lively Renaissance music performed on period instruments, including the cornet, shawm and sackbuts. The exciting new Brisbane Monteverdi Ensemble specialises in the performance of cornerstone works from 16th and 17th Century Europe.

4.15pm SWORDPLAY DEMONSTRATION from Prima Spada

Watch authentic Shakespearean swordplay by Prima Spada School of Fencing and learn about the skills and weaponry used in historical fencing. Based on the work of European masters of the 16th and 17th centuries.

5PM ROMEO AND JULIET

SATURDAY AND SUNDAY

2.30pm SHAKESPEAREAN DANCE WORKSHOP & DEMONSTRATION

Learn to dance like you're at the Capulet ball! Join dance historian Dr Heather Blasdale Clarke as she teaches beautiful dances from Shakespeare's time. Watch Dr Heather and her dancers demonstrate a few more dances, with live Renaissance music.

3pm LIVE MUSIC | The Stowaways

Tap your feet to traditional English and Italian dance tunes – the kind of music that Shakespeare may have heard in his day! Expert folk trio The Stowaways are Sebastian Flynn (violin), Martin Reese (mandolin), and Christian Rizzali (bouzouki).

3.30pm KIDS' CLASSIC SHAKESPEARE

Come and meet our storytellers Maxine Mellor and Nadine Kelly& #8239 ; to learn about the& #8239 ;famous playwright William Shakespeare, then take part in an interactive performance of the basic story of 'Romeo and Juliet'! What role will you play?& #8239 ;
Recommended age 3-12 years.

4pm SHAKESPEAREAN LANGUAGE TALK | Roly Sussex

What's in a name? Discover how Shakespeare's way with words made him one of the most famous playwrights in history! Roland 'Roly' Sussex is Emeritus Professor of Applied Language Studies at UQ. He has been broadcasting language segments on ABC Radio in Queensland for 23 years.

4.15pm SWORDPLAY DEMONSTRATION | Prima Spada

En garde! Agente! Watch authentic Shakespearean swordplay by Prima Spada School of Fence and learn about the skills and weaponry used in historical fencing. Based on the work of European masters of the 16th and 17th centuries.

5PM ROMEO AND JULIET

It is an open-air concert at the Roma Parklands Amphitheatre so bring a cushion and select your own seat on arrival. There is free face painting and food trucks on site or you can bring a picnic.

There is a low admission price for adults and children are free to experience all the MBS Shakespeare Festival has to offer.

With three shows this weekend you should be able to squeeze it into your schedule. Note due to the lack of a grant the festival will not also be held at Sandgate this year, so this is your only chance to experience the eloquence of the Bard.
