Karana Downs is located in South East Queensland and west of the Brisbane CBD. Although the developer named Karana Downs, it is said that the name "Karana" is an Aboriginal name meaning "quiet place". The locality, which includes Mount Crosby, Kholo and Lake Manchester as well as Karana Downs were originally part of the City of Ipswich however, the residents lobbied to become part of the City of Brisbane and in 2000, this became a reality.
