If you would like to have fun, get some exercise and raise money for Cancer while doing so, Relay For Life may be what you are looking for. Relay For Life began in the United States in 1985 as the initiative of colorectal surgeon Dr. Gordy Klatt, whose idea was to raise not only the awareness of cancer, but also to boost the income of his cancer charity.

Since then Relay for Life has become the largest world-wide fundraising event for cancer and is celebrated in over twenty countries. The Australian fundraising event kicked off in 1999 when the Murrumbeena community of Victoria raised over $75,000.

How the relay works:

On behalf of the Cancer Council , each event is organised by a volunteer committee. A team is made up of ten to fifteen people who will challenge themselves in a relay-style walk or run around a track for a period of up to eighteen hours. Teams are encouraged to plan a theme for their team with many dressing up for the event in costumes, although this is not compulsory. Participants can camp out overnight with campsites decorated in colours and themes relating to their team's costumes.

A registration fee is required to be paid by each person taking part in the event. Registration costs $30.00 per person. There are no age limitations or fitness levels required. The registration fee includes a shirt and breakfast in the morning after the event.

The Brisbane North Relay for Life will be held at Teralba Park , Osborne Road Mitchelton on Saturday 10th September, 2016. The Brisbane North event has a line-up of excellent on stage and roving entertainment with tasty food trucks on hand ready for hungry walkers.

Key ceremonies include the opening at 2.00pm, a candlelight ceremony at 7.00pm on Saturday and the closing ceremony at 8.00am Sunday morning, where a hearty breakfast will be served.

The event is free for anyone who wishes to attend and watch, otherwise, you may wish to be part of the relay with your own team. As an incentive to rouse up a team, the Brisbane North Relay For Life is giving each new team captain free registration.

If you cannot participate in a team event, yet would still like to be part of the event, volunteers are always welcome. More information on becoming a volunteer can be located on their website .

The Brisbane North Relay For Life is hoping to raise $30,000 for cancer. At present, their fundraising stands at $12,589.32. If you wish to know more about this great event, check out their website where all your questions can be answered.
