Brisbane's OpenAir Cinema is returning to South Bank for its Spring season, with recent-release movies and live music on offer from Sunday the 23rd of October until Sunday the 13th of November.

A gala opening celebration will kick things off on the 23rd, with live music by Australian bands Kisschasy, Hungry Kids of Hungary and Glass Towers. There'll also be fun games, a screening of inspirational film Life in a Day, and free ice-cream from OpenAirsponsors Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream. Proceeds from the opening night will support Animals Australia, and MTV will be there to cover the night live.

The normal season will then run most nights for the following three weeks, featuring recent releases such as Red Dog, Horrible Bosses, Friends with Benefits, Senna, The Help and more. There'll also be a special surprise screening for Halloween, and alternative classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show will turn up towards the end of the season. The OpenAir website advises that all films will run on a 'huge' screen.

At sunset, before the films begin, emerging local musicians will entertain movie-goers with acoustic sets. This year, OpenAir will also feature 'Sundae Sessions', a dedicated live music evening each Sunday night, with free Ben & Jerry's ice-cream for all.

Running in the Cultural Centre Forecourt, the OpenAir Cinema is a perfect way to enjoy Brisbane's balmy Spring weather, and take in a film at the same time. You can choose to bring a picnic rug or cushion, or hire a deck chair or bean bag, depending on your preferences and your budget. Food and drink will be on sale, but you can also bring your own, as long as you don't take alcohol.
Tickets for the opening night start at $37 plus booking fee and are selling fast. Tickets for the rest of the season range from $9 for kids, $12 for adults (BYO cushion) and up to $25 for a ticket that includes a reserved deckchair and a glass of wine.
Brisbane is the first stop for the Spring season of the OpenAir Cinema (no doubt because we get our warm weather soonest -- yay!), which will move on to Melbourne and Sydney later in the year. It's a wonderful chance to get out and under the stars while enjoying some fabulous films.

Note: The Openair Cinema has a fully licensed bar, so under 18s will only be permitted when accompanied by a responsible adult. The festival is wheelchair-accessible. In the case of cancellation due to rain (or other causes), tickets are transferable to other films during the season.
