Have you wondered how some buildings are designed? Do you sometimes wonder how building normally closed to the general public look like from the inside? On Saturday, 6th October, you can fulfil your curiosity during the annual Brisbane Open House Day 2012. You can take a sneak peak into beautiful homes and buildings free of charge.

If you are a lover of historical design, modern architecture, construction and engineering and building history, this is a rare opportunity to marvel at beautiful structures and admire the wealth of talent and hard work that went into creating these works of art.

Held in conjunction with World Architecture Day, Open House days are held around the world in places including Barcelona, Chicago, New York and London where art and design reign supreme. Brisbane has its own share of beautifully designed buildings and its participation has certainly raised its profile and the public's awareness of Brisbane's design and cultural history.

Selected buildings are available for visits from the public with volunteers available for guided tours. If you have a good knowledge of design and architecture or just have a love for historical and contemporary designs, you can sign up to volunteer on the day.

As a volunteer, you will be part of training sessions prior to the day where you can brush up your knowledge on the history of the buildings and general information about the event itself and how it came to be. If you love engaging with the community, this will be perfect for you as you may be required to meet and greet visitors, manage queues and guide tours around the buildings.

Generally, buildings open between 9-10am and will close between 3-4 pm on 6th October but if you would like to visit a specific building, it may be better to check the opening and closing times in the program or on the Brisbane Open House website.

Brisbane started taking part in the Open House day in 2010, successfully attracting more than 12,500 visits. The main purpose of the event is to encourage the community to engage with Brisbane's many beautiful spaces, allowing the public to explore Brisbane's many hidden treasures. Many of the buildings are built according to environmentally sustainable practices which the event is hoping to raise public awareness of.

If you are a photograph enthusiast, the Brisbane Open House photography competition is open to the public and will be judged based on quality, significance to architecture and creativity.

Buildings open to the public include Arkhefield Studio Populous Architects, at 418 Adealide Street, Brisbane. This architectural studio has a unique history as an iconic Queensland brewery, built in 1900 and refurbished in 1918-19 and 1928-29. Bisley Place House is a private family home that is also open to the public, designed by architect James Russell. Booking is required and an address will be provided to interested parties.
