Brisbane Open House 2015 - Sticky Beaks Welcome
The weekend for born sticky beaks is looming. Sticky Beaks Anonymous members should immediately set aside the weekend of Friday October 9 to Sunday October 11 to sate their thirst for exploring the hitherto unknown as Brisbane throws open its doors for the annual Brisbane Open House (BOH).

Over 100 venues are available for close inspection throughout the city and suburbs. There will be guided and self-guided tours, some of which, such as the Walter Taylor Bridge, require pre-booking. Over 4000 people have enjoyed a greet with Brisbane Greeters since the opening of this Indooroopilly icon to public view, so don't be left out of the swim.

If your interest runs to churches, you will learn of the history of the stained glass windows in our two cathedrals as well as other places of worship. Which church holds an important relic from Anzac Cove? Which church houses one of Brisbane's most moving pieces of public art? Where is there an amazing coin collection tracing the history of Christianity? Which stained glass windows are dedicated to the mysterious and philanthropic Mayne family?

There are many opportunities for a trip down memory lane. For example, you can return to the days when an outing with the kiddies to see George Wallace as the pantomime dame at the Cremorne was followed by ham and mustard on white bread sandwiches at the Shingle Inn. The original furnishings from the Edward Street cafe, in storage for many years, have been relocated to the Ground floor of the refurbished City Hall for your reminiscing pleasure. I am going to remember fondly childless "Auntie" Emily Foster, who adopted me as her panto companion in the 'fifties, when, as a BOH volunteer, I will delight in sharing my memories.

What are those half-sunken buildings behind the Windmill Tower at Spring Hill? What is inside them? If you don't have claustrophobic tendencies, venture down the staircase of the Spring Hill Reservoirs. No fear of drowning in this day and age, but the photographic opportunities are incredible.

Prior to Federation, each Australian State had to levy import taxes to help make ends meet, and Queensland was no different. BOH weekend is an excellent opportunity to view the magnificent interiors of that grand old lady on the river, the Brisbane Customs House.

Heritage buildings are not the only parts of the built environment on view over the BOH weekend. Wonder at the technology involved in the construction of Brisbane Square to meet the demands of a sub-tropical climate. Look behind the scenes of the ABC headquarters at Southbank. Marvel at today's educational opportunities for aspiring dental professionals at the University of Queensland's Oral Health Centre at Herston. Be inspired by the future of technology as presented at the QUT Science and Engineering Precinct.
