With fresh fruit and veggies on Saturdays and traditional market fare on Sundays – the Brisbane Markets at Rocklea is a great weekend distraction.
The Saturday Fresh Market is one of the best places in Brisbane to find good quality, fresh fruit and vegetables. Stall after stall is packed full of an impressive variety of produce, all at excellent prices. And the best thing is that the prices often get better as the day draws to a close. Watching the stall-holders compete for customers’ attention and business with friendly banter and bidding wars is definitely a bonus of these markets! There is a wide range of produce on sale besides just fruit and veg; you will also find organic meat, eggs, breads, deli goods, flowers and plants, to name a few.
Once you have stocked up on fresh foods at Saturday’s market, you can return the next day for the Sunday Discovery Market. Here you will find the more traditional market fare, both new and second-hand. Sunday is the day for sifting through all sorts of bargains: from clothing to collectibles, homewares to handicrafts.
On both days, once the shopping is done (or before the shopping has started), you can take a seat in the outdoor ‘food court’ and take your pick from a load of different food options. There are the famously cheap fry-up breakfasts, as well as German hotdogs, and all sorts of baked goods. Local bands and artists perform on-stage to entertain you while you eat. You can ‘follow’ the markets on Twitter for weekly specials and to find out who will be playing that weekend.
The easiest way to get to the markets from the city is on the Beenleigh train line; there are also bus links from various points across Brisbane – check out Translink for the details. If you are driving, there is plenty of parking for just $3 per car.
Get to Rocklea any way you can and fill your crisper with veggies, your shelves with knick-knacks and your weekend with markets!
