Over the last few weeks, my inbox has been inundated with emails regarding various running festivals. The running season is almost upon us, so it is time to slide off the couch, lace up the trainers and hit the pavement running - or jogging - or walking.

Some people baulk at the notion of "fun" and "run" being used in the same sentence. There are others who refer to the "runner's high" and constantly push themselves to their very limits. We are fortunate enough that here in Brisbane our weather is rather conducive to running/jogging. We certainly cannot use the excuse that it is too cold. Aside from a few events, the season starts to really get underway just as the humidity and wet season are subsiding. There are numerous events popping up on the calendar in just a few weeks and within each event there is usually a category to suit all levels of fitness.

The RACQ International Women's Day Fun Run/Walk is only two weeks away. It is a 5km run/walk and is held on Sunday 11th March. This event really is a "fun run". The course is rather scenic as you trot along the river, around the Botanical Gardens and back along South Bank. This is a great event for the novice and has a particularly buoyant atmosphere. The Twilight Running Festival is a little different. The first race begins at 4pm and the last begins at 5.45pm. This event is definitely a family affair as it offers events such as the 1km Kids Challenge. Parents can participate free of charge with the little ones and for those that have registered prior to 29th February the kids get their own personalised bib and their name called out on the course. How's that for motivation? There is also a 3km run/walk, a 10km run and a half marathon - a little something for everyone. Click here for more details.

Various Rotary Clubs also organise running events and the entry fee is often cheaper than some of the larger festivals. Take a look here and you will find the details for a run/walk on 15th April beginning at Griffith University, Nathan Campus. This course takes you through Toohey Forest which makes for a pleasant run - as long as you don't mind a few hills. Click here for more details. Held on 27 May, it is a very scenic run along the river through the grounds of University of Queensland, St Lucia.

Forgo breakfast in bed on Mother's Day and instead sign up for either a 4km or 8km walk or run. To register or for further details, click here . Beginning and ending at the Parklands, South Bank, it attracts large numbers and raises money for breast cancer research. Yet another race on the calendar with a great atmosphere.

The Bridge to Brisbane would have to be, without a doubt, the most popular of all "fun run" events. Attracting literally tens of thousands of competitors it seems to swell in size each year. Every year a different charity partner is chosen. Kids Helpline has been selected for 2012. This is one event which is definitely appropriate for all levels of fitness with many participants embracing the spirit of the day by wearing fancy dress. Click here for more details.

The Brisbane Running Festival is a little later in the year. As this comprises a 10km run, a half marathon and full marathon, it is perhaps for the more serious runner. Held in August and with a picturesque course along the Brisbane River, it is a perfect event to aim towards if setting new challenges.

These are the main festivals and events in Brisbane over the next few months. Remember there are many other races in Brisbane itself and plenty to choose from both up and down the coast if you need to change your scenery.

If you are in need of any motivation keep in mind that each "fun run" has a nominated charity. Participating is a great way to help raise money and awareness for a variety of causes. It is also an excellent way to set new goals and a great way to challenge yourself. Whether you are running on your own, with some friends or in a team everyone comes out a winner.
