It is approaching that time of year, when Southbank comes alive to the sounds of Brisbane Festival: 6 - 27 September 2014.

Brisbane Festival

With plenty to chose from (73 productions and 440 performances over 3 weeks) - including comedy, music, theatre, dance, opera and so much more. This is your chance to see our city come alive.

While there is much paid fun to be had, the Brisbane Festival has also included lots of fun freebies for you and your family.

Here are my top FREE picks:

1. Brisbane Airport Light Garden

This magic wonderland is for all ages. With stunning light installations that promise to delight. Pack a picnic and enjoy strolling through the illuminated Cultural Forecourt.

2. Do Do Land
Taking inspiration from Alice in Wonderland this aerial visual performance looks to be spectacular. Watch acrobatic stunts, while listening to specially composed music outside the Treasury Casino.

3. Art From the Margins

This free exhibition will be held in the beautiful Brisbane City Hall and features a range of "original, inspiring and challenging artworks by artists living with disadvantage and social isolation".

All works on display are from artists living with challenging life circumstance (eg physical or intellectual disabilities, mental health issues, homelessness ...) This exhibition is not to be missed.

4. SANTOS GLNG Twilight Music Series

Pack a picnic, or buy a drink and chill out of the banks of SouthBank listening to a series of free live musical performances. With the twilight sparkle of the Brisbane River as your backdrop, this is a must do.

5. The FAMOUS Sunsuper RiverFire!
Yes, it is that time of year when the most spectacular fireworks are on display for all of Brisbane to see. Choreographed to this years biggest songs - along with some classics, I am sure this years festivities will not disappoint. Tune into Triple M or Channel 9 for a live broadcast and grab your vantage point early.
