The Brisbane Festival is the highlight of the year for fans of art, music, theatre and opera. With so much on I can't possibly write about everything, but below is a list of this year's hottest performances as well as tips on how to get the best deals.Don't forget to check out this list of free festival events .

Tickets & Discounts

Most Tickets are available to be booked through the Brisbane Festival website . Rather than festival passes, Brisbane Festival gives you discounts for booking multiple tickets. The more events you attend, the more you save. Book tickets for 3 or more shows and you will receive a 15% discount.

For great deals check out Bristix which will have heavily discounted last minute tickets for shows that are not sold out. While the discounts can be up to 40%, don't expect to find tickets for your favourite shows on sale. Though lookout for tickets to midweek sessions for great deals.

Festival Flavours Deals

Between August 1 and September 24, a selection of great Brisbane restaurants will be offering you a chance to book discount tickets to Brisbane Festival Events. Eat at one of the Festival Flavours restaurants then book your discount festival tickets. Eating at one of the restaurants also gives you a chance to enter a competition to win a two night all inclusive holiday to Singapore. You can see the full list of Festival Flavours Partners here .

Free Events

What makes a city festival great is usually the range and style of free events on offer. Brisbane festival has several free events with the highlight being RiverFire which lights up the Brisbane River with fireworks. Read more about the list of free events here .

Audience Engagement

The Brisbane Festival does a lot to engage with the audience. This includes The Symphony For Me concert where the audience is able to select the musical pieces that they want performed through to Festival Conversations where you have the chance to ask questions to and learn from the festival organisers.

Highlights

There is no realistic way to talk about everything that is on at the Brisbane Festival. Below are some of the highlights for 2016. Visit the Brisbane Festival Website for the complete list.

Rules of the Game

A great contemporary dance performance has come exclusively to Brisbane straight from New York. This is dance as spectacular visual art.

Meow Meow's Little Mermaid

This great cabaret performance takes on the classic tale of The Little Mermaid. The question isn't just, can she find love, but what really counts as a happy ending. Fun, raunchy, provocative and thoughtful, all in a single performance.

En Avant, Marche!

This performance combines elements found in dance, theatre and opera and features brass band music. Over 40 performers will appear on stage in this spectacular production.

Blanc de Blanc

Imagine a sexy cabaret circus and you are halfway to understanding what Blanc de Blanc is about. I am definitely off this year to enjoy the bubbles, great tunes, big moves and, I am told, some surprises at the Magic Mirrors Spiegeltent.

Snow White

This year there are actually two festival events featuring the fairest of them all. La Boite presents a gritty retelling of Snow White and challenges the concepts of good and evil in this classic story. For a much sexier and stylish Snow White see Ballet Preljocaj's exclusive Australian premiere direct from France.

A Midsummer Night's Dream

This is one of Shakespeare's most accessible and funny plays. The Lyric Hammersmith and Filter Theatre Company from the UK emphasises the physical comedy in this always fun work.

California Crooners Club

3 guys singing a range of popular and classic songs in a modern crooning style that evokes Dean Martin and Sinatra if they were singing to modern pop, hip hop and rock audiences.

Troppo

Go to the mystical island of Troppo with a rag tag troupe of circus performers. Expect a humorous and adventurous acrobatic performance from these great circus rock stars.

George

ARIA award winning 1990s Brisbane band George has reunited and has returned to perform at the Brisbane Festival to celebrate the 20th year anniversary of their formation. This is an opportunity to return to the days of great indie music of the 1990s.

You Should Be Dancing

If you go to this free event you should be dancing. First they teach you the steps, then you join in the show. Styles differ each night, and include polka, boot scooting, Bollywood, Latin and of course Waltz and Promenade. This is the free event that is on my must-attend list (not so sure about the Polka night though.)

La Verita

This dream-like circus extravaganza created by Crique du Soleil's Daniele Finzi Pasca, is great for all ages. There will be singing, juggling, clowns, acrobatics, contortionists, a Can-Can and much much more. La Verita will be a fantastic spectacle.

Riverfire

It all ends with one of the most popular public events in Brisbane, Riverfire. Find a spot by the river between Victoria Bridge and Story Bridge and enjoy the spectacular fireworks display.
