The sports and the performing arts comes alive in Brisbane to see out of the second month of Spring in 2012. As promised in my September article, these are the top things to do in Brisbane in October. These events are presented in date order, not necessarily in order of preference.
1. Polo Australian Championships
This event was such a success at the Doomben racecourse for the first time last year, the finals will be on again at the same location for 2012 on the 7th of October. The first match is anticipated to start at around 11am. If you like the Paspaley Polo in the City events, then you'll like the polo finals here. Entry is much cheaper too. Entry starts from $20.
Its on again, a classic beer fest at the RNA showgrounds from the 7th to the 16th of October. If you're into craft beer in particular, you will be in for a treat. Entertainment is also provided, including a family fun day that falls on the Sunday during Oktoberfest. Face painting and rides are also available for the kids. Further information on this event can be found by clicking here.
Suncorp Stadium will be packed once more come the 20th of October for the Bledisloe Cup rugby union. Go the Qantas Wallabies.
4. Straddie Assault Surf Competition
In its 29th year, the best surfers come out and compete at Stradbroke Island. Although an invitation only event, the best surf clubs from Lennox Heads right up to Noosa come to Brisbane to compete. A chance for junior surfers to compete at the elite level. Will be held on the 20th to the 21st of October.
5. Tribute of Sorts
La Boite theatre is home to yet another quality play for the month of October. The play is about an amazing couple armed with a challenging task. Will be held from the 24th of October to the 10th of November.
6. Valley Fiesta
Valley Fiesta right in Fortitude Valley is one of Brisbane's premier (biggest) street parties. Similar to the Big Day Out, a music lovers treat is enjoyed. Arrested Development are more well known out of the bands performing, yet Brunswick Street Road will be home to some free, quality street entertainment on the 26th and the 27th of October. Further information can be found by clicking here.
7. Island Vibe
Stradbroke Island is highlighted yet again, and for all of the right reasons. Another popular music festival is on from the 26th to the 28th of October. Further information on this event can be found by clicking here.
The Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) brings a play that is dubbed as one of the world's best Opera's. Looks like this dynamic city is giving Melbourne and Sydney a good run for their money.
Enjoy October Brisbane, and enjoy the best music and culture that your city has to offer this month.
