Nothing makes me feel quite as culturally-savvy as saying "I knew him/ her/ that band ... before they were big".

And nothing gets me more excited than knowing a whole lot of on-the-brink-of-global-fame artists will be in the one place at the one time.

That is, at the 2013 Brisbane Emerging Art Festival.

Presenting Brisbane's leading emerging artists from across dance, fashion, film, design, visual art, performance, music, and spoken word, the BEAF will engulf the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts this Saturday.

The festival was launched in 2010 to showcase and promote Brisbane's emerging creatives and the city's contemporary arts culture.

The BEAF's vision is "to highlight and connect local artists, while being a catalyst for new and experimental art practice".

Supported by the local creative community, it has become an annual burst of creator-spectator engagement and cultural celebration.

**The 2013 artistic program will comprise of: A visual art exhibition of contemporary emerging artists; A performance and presentation main stage; Experimental sound and music spaces; Experimental theatre and dance performances; An emerging film makers screening, and; Spoken word performances.

Look out for:
MakeShift Dance Collective

This independent, collective of dancers and choreographers has committed itself to contributing to and fostering a vibrant, diverse dance community within Brisbane.

Formed in 2011, MakeShift strives to create art that moves, grounds, arrests, reflects and questions.

The collective consists of five dance artists — graduates of Queensland University of Technology and/or LINK Dance Company.

MakeShift has performed at the Brisbane Festival, Dance Week 2012, last year's BEAF, CrossStitch for MetroArts, Short Sweet Dance Festival (Sydney and Canberra), Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts' Fresh Ground Residency, and Ausdance Queensland's Bell Tower and Brisbane Front residencies.

MakeShift has developed a new work especially for BEAF 2013.
Get excited.

Aboriginal Centre for the Performing Arts

I saw the ACPA group perform at this year's Anywhere Theatre festival.

At least I think it was them. Either they performed a contemporary version of Romeo and Juliet, or I was lost in a dream, taken back to the time when 'you' were 'thou', and to a place where emotions flowed like a passionate tango.

The ACPA comprises Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from urban, regional and remote communities across the country.

The group brings stories to life through a phenomenal spin on traditional storytelling through words, music and dance.

At the BEAF, they will perform contemporary dance pieces.
I'm so there.

Film Screenings

The inaugural BEAF FILM Screening will showcase a program of short films and documentaries from recent graduates of QUT and Griffith Film Schools, alongside local film makers.

Curated by 48 Hour Film Project producer Matt Grehan, the Screening will be held in the BEAF's main performance space.

Kupka's Piano

This newly formed contemporary music ensemble took its name from Bohemian painter Frantisek Kupka's iconic 1909 painting The Piano Keys.

They aim to entice audiences into hearing new sounds, new structures, new musical ideas.

Kupka's Piano has filled a hole in Brisbane's music scene, profiling the best and latest from European, Australian and international modern art music.

With all members in their 20's, Kupka's Piano is:

Peter Clark · conducting/composition
Hannah Reardon-Smith · flutes
Macarthur Clough · clarinets
Alethea Coombe · violin
Alex Raineri · piano
Angus Wilson · percussion
Liam Flenady · composition
Michael Mathieson-Sandars · composition
