For a family picnic, an early morning jog, an afternoon stroll or a weekend wedding, has you covered.

The gardens are located just 10 minutes from the CBD on the Brisbane River. It borders Parliament House and the Queensland University of Technology(QUT) and can be accessed via the Goodwill Bridge if you’re coming from South Bank or by catching a ferry to the Edward Street terminal. If you're approaching from the city you can catch the free loop bus for a lift right to the front door.

The park's large grassy areas make it a suitable location for a weekend picnic or a casual sport game with mates. There is also a playground for the kids and two public toilet locations, which can be found next to the river stage and next to QUT. Designated areas for picnics are at the rear of the park near the university, although there are several picnic tables and sheltered areas placed around the park.

According to Brisbane City

“The gardens' plant collections include the first Queensland native plants to be formally planted. Visitors to the gardens will also see exotic plants. Some exotic plants were imported in colonial days to establish crops for the new Brisbane colony. Artists have also created number of heritage features at the gardens.“

The garden was officially opened in 1855. It has many attractions including the Mangrove Boardwalk , the Australian Heritage listed Walter Hill Fountain and the Bamboo Grove.

If you’re worried about getting lost, don’t be. Those who get turned around easily can attend a free volunteer guided tour of the park. They leave twice daily from the main rotunda at 11am and 1pm, Monday to Saturday. There are no tours unfortunately on Sundays. Set aside about an hour for the tour.

If you’ve left a packed lunch at home, the City Gardens Café is located inside the park just off Alice Street. It’s open from breakfast through to afternoon tea.
