Brisbane's Barefoot Bowls

It's the craze that's sweeping the nation. People, young and old, fit or just fun-loving, are making the most of our beautiful weather and getting down with some barefoot bowls. It's the combination of sunshine, beer and friendly competition that makes this pastime a hit with such a broad demographic.
Once known as a sport only for retired people, lawn-bowls has been given a new lease on life by many clubs by the introduction of 'barefoot-bowls'. As the name suggests, the sport is very similar to the traditional lawn-bowls, except for the attire; no shoes required. There are many bowls clubs in the Brisbane area that are happy to accommodate, and even encourage, barefoot bowls. The surge of young people partaking in the sport has seen the traditional attire for lawn bowls, a white outfit and flat bottom shoes, become replaced by jeans, a T-shirt and no shoes.
The other drawcard is the price. A standard game of bowls costs $5 per person for a two hour game, and that includes a brief coaching session. There are usually cheap meals to follow at the bowls club. Merthyr Bowls Club, located overlooking the Brisbane river in New Farm, has great group packages with BBQ and bowls from $20 pp but if you want to book a corporate/group event you better plan ahead, as it is a popular spot. Other clubs have cheap beer or night-time bowls in order to draw the socially-inclined from the pubs towards the bowls clubs.
For a great value day that you and your mates (and your mate's grandma) will enjoy, why not lose the shoes and head to your local bowls club for some beer, a barbeque and barefoot bowls.
