The Brisbane Astronomy Society (BAS) invites amateur star-gazers to their near-monthly Public Viewing Nights.

Roughly one Saturday a month, non-members are invited to Mt Coot-tha Lookout (1012 Sir Samuel Griffith Drive) and Maleny Golf Club (15 Porters Lane) to search for planets, asteroids and other outer space treasures through the public telescope. Experienced members will be on hand to assist as needed.

Dates are dependent on the location of the moon, with the BAS preferring times close to the first quarter phase of the moon. This allows terrestrials to see the craters of the moon, and the darker sky makes it easier to spot other celestial objects.

This event is also weather dependent. Dates are posted to the website and Facebook page and as a general rule of thumb, if it's not raining nor overcast and you can see the moon, the Public Viewing will go ahead.

Afterwards, visitors to the Brisbane location are welcome to enjoy food and the view of the city at Kuta Cafe.

The BAS Public Viewing Night is free to attend, although gold coin donations are welcome. The event at both locations begins at sunset.
