Queensland is typically known as the sunny capital of Australia. The warm rays spread from the fine white sand beaches with blue crashing waves on the coastline, over the vibrant city centres and through to the lush hinterlands that house koalas, kangaroos and kookaburras.

However at times the clouds begin to hover overhead and the rain starts gushing down over the sea of colourful, polka dot and duck faced umbrellas - for in Queensland the vibrancy will never leave.

While those at home have the luxury of cooking up a bowl of popcorn and putting on a good movie to relax into the tinkering sounds of water hitting the rooftop, those out and about need a quick escape until the rain passes.

In Brisbane, the rain is never a deterrent from ones plans. However for those who need a back up plan on a rainy day, here is a top five list of things to do.

1. Head to Paddington and settle in to one of the many cafés in renovated houses that boast picture windows or a balcony, allowing diners to sit and watch the rain pass through over a warm hot chocolate and homemade cakes.

2. QAGOMA in South Brisbane is Brisbane's prized art gallery (once featured Valentino, Matisse and California Designs). While the floor to ceiling glass walls are an impressive site, what is featured on the inside will have you occupied and highly entertained for the remainder of the day.

3. Palace Barracks is a luxury cinema on the outskirts of the city centre. The cinema featured mainstream films as well as independent films. Viewers are welcomed to take in olive oil popcorn, ice cream and a glass of wine or premium beer.

4. The Blue Room Cinebar is another luxury cinema in Brisbane. The Blue. Room is located in the leafy suburb of Rosalie. Likewise, viewers may order alcoholic drinks such as cocktails as well as a hot meal that can be brought in by the staff at a time specified by the viewer.

5. Those who are not bothered by the rain can jump in the car and head to Sunshine Coast or the Gold Coast for a rainy day swim and play at the beach. Just watch how those weather conditions might effect the surf and always check the swimming conditions with the life guards.
