There is so much going on in the city as BrisAsia kicks off with a rich and varied cultural programme of activities from the 5th to the 28th of February. For more information on the Festival go to the website .

I am going to take you a little out of town and explore the connections between Queensland's shores and Japan. The cross continental migration of birds between the Boondall Wetlands and its sister wetlands in Narashino Japan is something worth finding out about.

Walks are available to celebrate World Wetlands Day 2016.

No bookings are required. Join a free guided walk in beautiful Boondall Wetlands to mark World Wetlands Day 2016 and help celebrate the BrisAsia Festival. Discover the significance of World Wetlands Day, and why Brisbane's Boondall Wetlands and its 'sister wetlands' at Yatsu Higata Tidelands in Narashino, Japan are crucial to the thousands of migratory shorebirds that travel between Asia and Moreton Bay each year. Participants will walk 2km and visit the Nundah Creek bird-hide.

These walks are available on the following dates:

**Sat and Sun 6th and 7th Feb 9 am to 11am
Sat and Sun 13th and 14th Feb 9am to 11am
Sat and Sun 20th and 21st Feb 9am to 11am
**
In addition to the above the following special events are being held to celebrate Brisbane's proud Asian connections:

Sat 13th 9am to 12noon - Bird Masks Art and craft for kids

No bookings are required. Let children help themselves to this fun, simple do-it-yourself art and craft activity. Make and decorate a bird mask to celebrate the journey of migratory shorebirds between Asia and Moreton Bay each year. Check out the centre displays for inspiration. This is a drop-in activity with room for up to ten people at a time to use the materials. The activity is available 9am – 12 noon.

After creating your bird mask, why not explore the wetlands on a self-guided walk, or bring along a picnic lunch to enjoy in the beautiful natural surroundings. Borrow free binoculars (photo ID required), track booklets, and totem trail guides at the centre.
Sun 14th 9am to 11.30am Kamishibai and Kites, story telling and art for kids.

Bookings are essential. Enjoy a kamishibai story and kite-making activity at Boondall Wetlands. Kamishibai is a style of Japanese storytelling for children. Follow 'Tom' the shorebird as he flies from Siberia to Japan and Brisbane's Boondall Wetlands, then have fun making a simple shorebird kite. Learn about the amazing lives of migratory shorebirds and their epic journeys between Asia and Moreton Bay.

After the activity, you can explore the wetlands on a self-guided walk, or bring along a picnic lunch to enjoy in the beautiful natural surroundings. Borrow free binoculars (photo ID required), track booklets and totem trail guides at the Environmental Centre.
**Sat 20th 9am to 12 Bird Masks and DIY craft for kids as above.

**
**Sun 21st 10 am to 11.30 Kamishibai and Kites as above.
**
Come and enjoy this form of Japanese paper theatre for children. Kite making is also on the programme, as well as walks in the wetlands, which are just perfect for a weekend's morning activity.

These events, which are free, all take place at Boondall Wetlands Environment Centre, 31 Paperbark Drive, Boondall.

Most of the events do not require bookings but for the ones that do please make sure you book your place in time.
