Brighton Dog Beach (aka Sandown Street Beach)

The Brighton Dog Beach (officially known a Sandown Street Beach) is a fabulous part of the world in Bayside. Nestled between Elwood Beach and the Middle Brighton Baths, it is a fantastic spot to take your pooch out for a run amongst the surf and sand.

To get here requires a bit of navigation, so may this review begin in this area. To start, whether by car or by foot arguably the easiest route to access the Beach is via the Bay St entrance.

In turn, while the beach is most certainly worth accessing, a good entrancepoint can be tricky to find at first. Here's what you should keep an eye out for as you walk along the path towards it.

Once you are in and have arrived you'll surely see why this beach is a great place to stop by with your dog. With a broad array of sand dunes, shrubs - and perhaps another visiting dog or two to play with- your pup may well feel like hes in doggy heaven along the foreshore.

What's more, while true this is doubtless not the most suitable spot for a quick swim - the aforementioned Elwood or South Road Beach are surely better bets - it is undoubtedly one of the most diverse of Melbourne's beaches.

With the long expanse of Brighton's pier on your left stretching out to the marina you've chance to eye and admire some of the many boats in dock, and in turn - especially in the summer - those that take sail and stream along the glistening water. Yet, look to your right and you'll see a just-as-pretty sight; the Melbourne CBD.

Indeed so good is this view that this spot is regularly used during New Year Eve celebrations when many come from miles around to take in the city fireworks from afar and ring in the new year. Yet, true, your dog may not be altogether interested in that - and doubtless happiest just frolicking in the sand - but its surely something to keep in mind as you find yourself not just walking along a dedicated dog beach; but taking in the resplendent sights and surrounds as you do.

With this, a final word is useful on the on/off leash policy. While some signs dot along the path to the beach, once you are leave the beach it is indeed an on leash area once again. To be sure, this is an easy mistake to make - and nobody likes getting a fine - so its just something worth keeping in mind if planning a visit for the first time.

Factor in this point though, and the beach promises a flawless afternoon out for you and your pooch to get along to. The Brighton Dog Beach, a great spot to bring your pup and take in a fantastic stretch of Melbourne's coast.
