The popular Bridge Road Film Festival, showing big screen classics for free, is back for 2015. I went last year and loved it.

There is something about going to such a majestic building (Richmond Town Hall) to see a movie. This huge monolithic building was built in the Venetian Gothic Style in the 1890s but had an Art Deco facelift in the 1930s that makes for striking architecture.

You can come and see some of your favourite classic movies and afterwards wander over to one of the restaurants in the area that are offering cheap meal deals on the night. The movies themselves are free and a way of attracting people to this great retail strip.



The movies will be screened on Saturdays at 5:30pm.

They have bean bags in the pipeline for this year as well as the usual chairs. So you get to choose your seating. There is also wheel chair access.





Here is the line-up.

11th April - The Castle - M (back by popular demand)
Some of the lines from The Castle get bandied around in our house. Especially when I cook something ordinary. The exchange with my husband and son goes something like this and is of course straight from the movie

Boys:Woo hoo. What' do you call this?
Me : Chicken.
Boys: and it's got something sprinkled on it
Me (smugly) : Seasoning

They love complementing me on my lacklustre cooking.

And who could forget such memorable lines as Darryl Kerrigan's- "This is going straight to the pool room" or examples of Dale Kerrigan's maths: "Dad reckons fishing is 10% brains and 95% muscle, the rest is just good luck."

This much loved Australian movie will probably go down in history as a movie about Aussie "battlers" taking on the big wigs, to keep their beloved house. Because as the real estate agent says "Location, location, location" and their house is right next to the airport.

The trouble with this adorable but naive family is that it is not just planes going over their heads. An Australian favourite no matter how many times you see it.



18th April - Top Gun - PG

Starring a young baby-faced Tom Cruise as well as Tim Robbins and Kelly McGillis. Students at the navy's elite fighter weapons school compete to be best (top gun) of their class. Some great stunt flying as part of their training as well as some high flying human drama when they are on rec leave.


9th May - Star Wars - A new hope PG

16th May - Jaws - M

Once seen never forgotten and swimming at the beach is never quite as it was before. Jaws is a 1975 American thriller film directed by Steven Spielberg and a predictor of the wonderful success he would have from there on in. It's about, a giant man-eating great white shark attacking beachgoers on Amity Island, a fictional summer resort town.

If you haven't seen it since you were kid you can see now how beat up the whole shebang was (that shark is fake as) but it still pushes all the right buttons when it comes to shots of adrenalin. Starring Roy Scheider as police chief Martin Brody, Richard Dreyfuss as oceanographer Matt Hooper, Robert Shaw as shark hunter Quint, Murray Hamilton as the mayor of Amity Island, and Lorraine Gary as Brody's wife, Ellen.



6th June - Singin' in the Rain - G

Singin' in the Rain is a 1952 American musical comedy film directed by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen, starring Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor and Debbie Reynolds. It is set in Hollywood in the late '20s, with the three stars caught up in the transition from silent films to "talkies." Today the musical has achieved legendary status as contemporary critics continue to promote it. I'll bet even David Stratton would come out of retirement to attend this one. He has often mentioned it as his favourite film.



**20th June - Blues Brothers - M (back by popular demand)

Then the Blue Brothers triumphant return to Richmond. This movie has got some of the greatest music ever, the best lines and the best gags. If you haven't seen this classic you have really missed out. The boys are on a mission from God and they are about to take you on a wild ride.

Years ago the Valhalla Cinema in Richmond was where the Blues Brothers movie was on every Friday night (there was a Bluesmobile parked outside and lots of people came in costume) so it is kind of sweet that this is one of the movies they are showing. It is is almost as if Jake and Elroy have come home to roost.



Tickets are free but you can only book your sessions three weeks prior to each screening.

Tickets are available through Eventbrite.

This means you have to be a bit organised but not as rushed as having to book them the day before as you do for the incredibly popular films at Southgate's free Deck Chair Cinema.
