Brick & Mortar is so much more than just a cafe. It's a creative hub for Adelaide entrepreneurs, artists, designers and of course, lovers of great coffee. You'll find it just off The Parade in Norwood, tucked in beside the Norwood Concert Hall on George Street.
Inside Brick & Mortar is a cleverly designed retail space packed with locally made products from artists and producers, while exhibitions from printmakers, visual artists and even origami folders grace the walls. There's so much to see, it's worth adding a little extra time to your visit just to wander through the displays and see what you might find. For example, maybe you'll spot a beautiful card with Emma Kate Co.'s stunning calligraphy, or something from Gemma Vendetta's range of vegan mineral cosmetics. That's assuming you can draw yourself away from the handmade bags, mindful paper journals and boutique jewellery on display.
Walk upstairs and you'll find a few extra tables available for free use by those looking for a quiet spot for a meeting or to catch up on a bit of work. This space can also be booked for private meetings or small functions. There's free wifi available (up to 150mb), but if you need extra data or plan to pop in for more regular visits, you can purchase more. Up here there are also a few private studios available for rent. If you're interested, get in touch with Brick Mortar or
check out their website for further info.
So what exactly makes Brick & Mortar such a creative hub? Well, apart from supporting local product makers and producers, they also run
creative workshops and events throughout the year. You can learn everything from brush lettering and calligraphy through to DSLR photography and even the fine art of networking and introducing yourself to other like-minded creatives.
Now, the piece de resistance of Brick & Mortar would have to be their
incredible breakfast and lunch menus .
The breakfast menu is available all day, so it made sense to start off our little brunch fest with the Chia Bowl, which features a blend of creamy almond milk and cacao chia topped with juicy blueberries and strawberries, dark vegan chocolate, crunchy pistachios and toasted coconut shavings. It was sweet and satisfying and would have to be one of the more luxurious ways to wake yourself up in the morning. SO. YUM.
Meanwhile, on the opposite end of the flavour spectrum, the Spicy Bean Bowl was like a big bowl of comfort, with lots of bright and spicy chilli and turmeric flavours. It comes with poached eggs, avocado, and a slice of the most amazing grilled sourdough we've come across in our foodie adventures.
Sitting somewhere in between was the Sourdough Toastie. We tried the Pumpkin & Greens version which had delicately sweet flavours of roast pumpkin rounded out with earthier tones from grilled mushrooms and fresh rocket. It also comes in Pulled Chicken & Provolone, Prosciutto & Jarlsberg, and Smoked Salmon & Dill. Yep, it's going to be a tough choice!
If you're just after a coffee and a light snack, the housemade cakes are a nice alternative. We couldn't resist topping off our brunch with a slice of their gluten free Orange & Ricotta Cake, which was fluffy and moist and went down perfectly with a hot cup. For those who take their beans seriously, the coffee is made with beans from 1645 Coffee Roasters, while the chai is by Grounded Pleasures.
Brick & Mortar also have a range of healthy smoothies and freshly squeezed juices. We couldn't resist the Green Smoothie, which was blended with baby spinach, banana, cinnamon, nutmeg, dates and (to the delight of our taste buds) luscious coconut milk. Creamy, sweet, and deliciously smooth(ie).
