Brew Ha Ha is a comedy night run on the first Thursday of every month at Gertrude's Brown Couch on Gertrude's Street in Fitzroy. The venue is perfect for a comedy night with it's chic upstairs bar and stage where you can choose to sit on a comfy couch, on the front chairs or even in a booth up the back (away from any "audience participation" risks). This relaxed style gives the up and coming comedians a lot of confidence.
October Line-up 2011
Spencer Hodges and Alasdair Tremblay-Birchall are the two young comedians who host and MC the event every month where they are into their second year of running the event. This means they get to book acts, several being well known stars such as Charlie Pickering, Sammy J and Lehmo, as well as give themselves time to work on their own material. I personally think the night is run really well with it's jug-winning competition of their made up trivia segment, "What happens next..." which is where they get a ridiculous video and show you a scene where you have to guess "what happens next". This is a great way of involving the audience and is almost sure to get laughs every time. An example was the TV show, "Man vs. Beast" where people take on animals in competitions such as an Orangutan vs. a Sumo in a tug-of-war. Who wins? That's the funny part. Yes, it's outrageous but is sure to get laughs.
I do see a lot of comedy these days and the underrated part of Brew Ha Ha is how they always get a mixture of comedians to perform. That way you don't continuously hear musical comedians or one-liner comedians but you get the mixture. Hodges and Tremblay-Birchall have created a comedy night that's accessible as well as being relaxed, informal and truly a good time. The night is professional and well thought out in comparison to the many other comedy nights run in Melbourne where I can guarantee it being the most fun you can have on a Thursday night. Let's be honest, since university, Thursday nights lost their interest a bit. I find no better way to spend it then to relax on the couch, with a good beer, laughing at the many different comedians Brew Ha Ha have on show. It's definitely a cool and different way to spend a Thursday night and you get that fuzzy feeling of supporting the young Melbourne talent as well.
In this coming month they have booked Michael Chamberlain and RAW Comedy champion, Dayne Rathbone. Both these guys have made a mark at the comedy festival and are sure to entertain. I've even heard that Spencer and Alasdair are thinking of putting together sketch videos to break it up even more and I think that addition will really make it a popular night. The more avenue's they explore the more fun the night becomes. They should get a pat on the back because their enthusiasm for the industry is infectious where their futures are bright in the world of comedy.
