If you head an hour south from Canberra along the Monaro Highway any time between June and December, you're in for a big and totally bonkers surprise! What, you may ask, could it be? The drive will land you in the sleepy town of Bredbo which happens to have a great big sprinkle of magic in the air. The town is home to the and the second you open the door, you'll be catapulted into another world - a world full of joy, cheer and a whole lot of Christmassy goodness.

The is BIG and stuffed as full as a stocking on Christmas morning - you'll find baubles, trees, candles, wreaths and lights to suit any taste. To appreciate how nuts this place is, you really need to step inside and soak it in. If you don't crack a smile, you are either the Grinch or one of his very close relations. And while there is a lot going on in the Christmas Barn, don't fear the cheap and tacky approach - instead, you'll find a celebration of the type of Christmas I remember from childhood when we used to unwrap the same glass ornaments my grandmother had lovingly wrapped in sheets of newspaper year after year. You'll find things to treasure, things that will become the backdrop to your Christmas memories and those of your kids and grandkids.

The store is set out in themed areas and while I'm always drawn to the traditional trees dripping in deep red, rich gold and trimmed with fat generous tinsel, if that isn't your thing don't worry. There are trees for every home from sleek white and silver to gregarious bright; from log cabin cosy to candy shop sweet. You'll find Santas in every shape and size, whole herds of reindeer hiding among a forest of trees with angels, fairies and stars hovering above.

The backdrop to the Christmas Barn experience is a soundtrack of cheerful carols, the scent of cinnamon, orange and cloves and enough lights to brighten the darkest Christmas Eve. Consider a trip to the Christmas Barn your excuse to take a break from adulting for a day and get lost in the moment. This is as much an experience as an opportunity to stock up on decorations so save some time to soak it all up and rediscover that joy of Christmas.

One word of advice - the Christmas Barn becomes absolutely hectic in December especially on weekends. I think that adds to the bustle and fun of the Christmas but if that isn't your cup of tea consider checking it out earlier in the year or mid-week when you'll have as much space and time as you need to explore.
