Suicide, death, depression, murder and violence. These are the topics you'll be exposed to during Breathing Corpses, a 90-minute performance at the KXT (Kings Cross Theatre). The play is told through a series of five acts, in non-chronological order, each focusing on different themes and characters. Whilst each act is a mini tale in its own right, pieced together they form an intertwined story of how people confront and manoeuvre mortality, both theirs and others.

Set design is minimal but shrewd, as what starts out as a bedroom is easily transformed between each act to transport you to the next destination. And with this being a small theatre, with a centrally positioned stage, there isn't a bad seat in the house.

The play was the first I have attended where two of the performers were reading from a script. The reason being that shortly before curtain up, two of the original cast fell victim to 'the virus' and had to be urgently replaced so that the show could go on. And go it did, and rather swimmingly. The stand-in actors did a phenomenal job, and whilst they were holding pieces of paper this didn't detract from the sincerity of their performance. Not forgetting the remaining cast members who each did a fabulous job.

There is no getting away from the fact that due to the themes, the play is macabre. But it's somewhat gentle and occasionally humorous in its storytelling, whilst exploring the perpetual cycle of death and violence.
