Leapfrogs bills itself as the biggest little busy place north of the river. And it probably is.

Having grown substantially over the past few years, including the installation of a wood-fire pizza oven, Leapfrogs café is located in the stunning Wanneroo Botanic Gardens, and home of not one but two mini golf courses. Of course it's busy – it has a dedicated and captive clientele.



But the thing is, the food is worthy of the setting, and you could easily visit for breakfast, lunch or dinner and never need to set foot on the green. It's not overly posh, but it is good food and generously served.

Leapfrogs is open for breakfast every day except Mondays, but if the Monday happens to be during school holidays or a public holiday, then it is open. It's not for the early birds, opening at 9am on weekdays and 8am on weekends, but with at least some of the tables having an outlook over the botanic gardens, it is perfect for those who want to eat their eggs with a view. It can't be a long breakfast though, as the breakfast menu finishes at 11.30am daily, and the lunch menu kicks in at noon (you can read more about the woodfired pizzas here ).



The breakfast menu, like the golf, is mini. There are only nine options plus an 'extra's list. Vegetarians are relatively well taken care of, and there is the option of gluten free bread ($3) if required.

It's pretty standard, with pancakes ($16.50), a muesli compote ($16.50), big breakfast ($23) and two types of eggs benedict (ham $18.50 and salmon $21.50). There is no specific kids menu at breakfast (this kicks in at lunch time) but the pancakes and eggs on toast ($15.50) should tempt most eaters.



I had the breakfast bruschetta ($16.50) which was two large toasted slices of bread, generously covered in mushrooms, spinach and feta. I was asked if I wanted freshly cracked pepper when it was deposited on the table, and I am glad I said no – it already had a generous peppery kick in the mushrooms. The serving size was decent, it felt fresh and there was plenty of feta. I felt quite healthy afterwards.



My daughter ordered the pancakes, which were two large fluffy rounds, cream, maple syrup and decorated with thinly sliced fresh strawberries. And a very liberal dusting of icing sugar. I didn't think she would be able to finish it, but she proved me wrong. The bite I managed to pinch when she was off looking at the koi in the pond, proved they were light and tasty.

The other interesting breakfast dish is the bean cassoulet ($18.50) which comes with chorizo, poached egg and crusty bread.

Leapfrogs opens an hour before the mini golf starts, so if you arrive early you would be able to have a quiet breakfast in a stunning setting. If you're planning a late peaceful breakfast during school holidays though, you might want to rethink your plans.



Bookings are only for larger groups (20 ) but since the expansion, there are now a number of eating areas including bar stools, leather couches, inside tables and chairs and multiple decks of undercover dining, which have gas heating in the winter, and cooling mist in the summer. You shouldn't have too much difficulty getting a table.
