The Brekkie Creek, as it is affectionately known, is an iconic pub located just north of the Brisbane city. The word pub, however, doesn’t quite convey what stands behind the heritage-listed exterior. The Brekkie Creek is almost a city within a city. There are not many places where you can spend an evening on a pub crawl and not have to leave the first pub on the list: the is one of these places.

Aside from some of the best steaks in Brisbane, within the Brekkie Creek city limits you will find heaps of different bar areas, a nightclub, a restaurant, outdoor seating out the front, outdoor seating out the back and a coffee cart, of all things.

When tackling this complex, however, my advice to you is this: eat first, explore later! The quality of the meals is no secret, which means the queues to order your food can get quite long. Having said that, they seem to have their ordering system down to a fine art, which keeps the queue moving pretty quickly. On the menu you will find steak varieties galore – from rumps to eye fillets, wagyu to filet mignon – as well as various other meal options for the vegetarians (because, let’s face it, if you aren’t eating the steak then you must be a vegetarian).

Once you have eaten, you can get down to the business of exploring, and drinking of course. Head first to the public bar, described on the hotel website as, “an old-fashioned public bar as it was meant to be, with terrazzo flooring, lofty ceilings, a huge square bar, barrels for tables and heaps of room to move”. In this bar you will find one of the pub’s greatest attractions: beer served ‘off the wood’, meaning that the beer is served out of old-school wooden kegs (a rare treat for beer lovers).

Once you have tasted the ‘old’, you can move onto the ‘new’, in Substation No 41. This is the ‘nightclub’ (for want of a better word) section of the hotel. In here you’ll find DJs and a dancefloor on weekends, and an extensive cocktail list. There are also free platters of nibblies on Friday afternoons.

The Brekkie Creek also offers plenty of outdoor seating: out the front overlooking Breakfast Creek, or in the covered Staghorn Gardens toward the back of the pub. If you took my advice, however, you would have already discovered these areas as they are the best places for enjoying your steak.

Find the bar that suits you best, sit back and enjoy the atmosphere of a great Brisbane pub.
