The Yongergnow Australian Malleefowl Centre in Ongerup is probably not the first place you'd expect to find the only person to beat an Iron Chef on the Australian television cooking show
Iron Chef.
But that's exactly where you will find Herb Faust, who until recently was heading up the restaurant at Houghton Wines in the Swan Valley.
Faust, who operates his own catering company, Herb Faust Food, will be in the Great Southern community of Ongerup to prepare a long table lunch on Saturday, April 6.
Held at the Yongergnow-Ongerup Community Resource Centre in the beautiful surroundings of the mallee country, home to the endangered malleefowl, Faust aims to make the most of the local produce.
The $100 ticket price includes lunch from 11.30am to 3pm and a welcome drink.
Faust, known for his Thai fusion food, has been a chef for more than 20 years and in 2010 was working at Scotch College when the opportunity came up to compete on Channel 7's
Iron Chef Australia.
He famously beat Iron Chef Guy Grossi, which gave him and his wife Deanna the impetus to launch their own catering business.
They now produce unique and stylish food for all kinds of catered occasions and events across the State.
Yongergnow was established to help the conservation efforts for the malleefowl, which is the fauna emblem for the Gnowangerup Shire.
The centre opened in 2007, and in 2008 the Yongergnow-Ongerup Community Resource Centre was co-located at the centre.
Yongergnow's primary contribution to malleefowl conservation is through education and awareness raising, showing off the birds in a captive environment.
The captive birds bred for the first time in the 2015/16 breeding season and the centre has now been able to release more than 10 birds back into the wild.
