Bread and Water Cafe is a 100% gluten-free cafe, tucked away in Newcastle East - just a stone's throw from the picturesque Newcastle Beach. It was previously located in Maitland where it gained a strong following, before moving to Newcastle where it has quickly gained more loyal and happy customers. This hidden gem is run by a lovely, hard-working couple who have given us amazing food and customer service on all of our visits.

If you are coeliac, like my partner, it is such a relief to order anything from the menu and know that there isn't any cross-contamination to make you feel ill for the next few days. He is also dairy-free and was impressed by the range of both GF and DF options on the breakfast and lunch menus. We had previously visited this busy cafe for lunch (where we devoured the delicious Crumbed Chicken Burger and chips), but on a cloudy Saturday morning, we decided to visit for breakfast. It didn't disappoint!



The cafe is small but full of character, with a few outdoor tables separated by pallet shelving filled with succulents, creating a laid-back, beach vibe. Inside you'll find five tables, but we've always been fortunate enough to snag a seat outside, where we can watch the hustle and bustle of the lively street.

On our breakfast visit, my coeliac partner chose a Bacon and Egg Roll ($14) and opted for a rosti to be put inside the roll for $4 extra. After chatting with the owner, we learnt that they make all of their own gluten-free rolls which are large, soft and delicious - even if you don't need to eat gluten-free.

Although my daughter and I aren't coeliac, we love the food at Bread & Water and on this visit, she enjoyed the Scrambled Eggs on Toast whilst I filled up with the House Muesli Bowl. As expected, all of the meals were full of flavour, our coffees hit the spot, and everything was delivered with excellent customer service. Our daughter particularly loved the large jar glasses that the drinks came in, with bumblebee-printed straws and plenty of ice. It is these small touches that make the whole experience enjoyable.

If you need to eat gluten-free in your diet, get yourself to Bread & Water in Newcastle East and support a local cafe that is supporting you. Even if you don't need to eat gluten-free, the food that comes out of the kitchen is homely and creative and you will leave with a smile on your face every time.
