Hands up Sydneysiders if you like sourdough bread. I think a good percentage of hands just shot up all over Sydney - we love it don't we? The evidence is in the significant number of sourdough bakeries that are spread throughout our great city. Some would say that the best is Bourke Street Bakery and I think a lot more will agree that it is, especially after you learn all about the
Bread & Butter Project .
is the first social enterprise bakery in Australia. It was set up by the owners of Bourke Street Bakery. Their group of bakeries are so successful and so loved by Sydneysiders that they thought they might give something back. That something was creating this awesome project whereby they are teaching the craft of sourdough baking to communities in need, namely refugees.
12 trainees are recruited for a 12 month period for a paid traineeship. They are taught all of the skills required to perfect the art of sourdough baking in the hope at the end of their traineeships that they have the necessary skills to gain employment. The bread that they have created is sold to fine food purveyors throughout Sydney. 100% of the profits are reinvested into baker training as well as employment avenues for those communities in need.
They create all sorts of delicious flavours such as a traditional white sourdough, 5 grain sourdough and the very festive sounding fig, raisin and cranberry sourdough from the artisan bakery in Marrickville. From there the bread is delivered to restaurants, cafes and stockists all over Sydney.
believe that they are "makers of bakers" and they are! It is so good to see such a successful business as Bourke Street Bakery having a social conscious. They want us to spread the word and obviously the best way to do this is to buy some of their fabulous bread. Farmers markets, David Jones in the city and Bondi Junction, Salts Meat Cheese in Alexandria and Martelli's Market in Rouse Hill are but a few places where you can pick up some of the Project's bread - check their
website for more stockists and cafes that sell and use this wonderful bread. Also you can donate both time and money to this great cause. On 's website you can make financial donations or you can volunteer some of your time by helping out on a Bread & Butter's stall at various farmers markets throughout Sydney.
So Sydneysiders next time you wake up and feel like some sourdough, think twice about where you will purchase it from. If you buy a loaf that has been created by you will not only be enjoying one of Sydney's finest artisan breads but you will also be doing something good for a community in need and as the makers of bakers say, this is a win - win for everyone!
