The Brazen Bull

I'm a retired photographer living in Lilydale mainly researching and writing on Australian aviation history. Now writing more on general subjects.

The Brazen Bull logo.

Sounds like it should be a restaurant, but it's not, it's a butchers shop.

Owner Jason derived the name from the ancient Greek method of torture, not that he wishes to torture his customers, just give them good friendly service and quality products.

Two very brazen bulls.

One normally associate butchers supplying beef, lamb and pork, and sausages of course, and they do supply all of those.

Almost a speciality is their range of chicken products. Apart from the everyday chicken fillets, they offer four different chicken filos. That's chicken in filo pastry, my favourite being chicken with camembert and bacon.

Some of the range of chicken products.

Chicken mini-roasts, chicken schnitzels, kievs, wings, wingettes and chicken sticks almost complete the range of chicken products.

Crumbed meats
The crumbed section.

An all-time favourite is sausages. If you want something different, I counted 17 different varieties. Spanish chorizo and pork apple & chutney were two of them. Personally I prefer the common or garden Bunnings type sausages. All their sausages are freshly made on the premises.

Seventeen different ones - count them.

Just like an actual restaurant a specials board frequently shows some bargain specials.

butcher shop
Always busy.

The butcher's standards of beef, pork and lamb are not forgotten. Steaks range from eye fillet to t-bone.

Many steaks

Pork has become very popular these days with your choice of medallions, spare ribs and chops.

Chops, crumbed cutlets, back straps and shanks are some of the lamb offerings.

A very good range of products.

Of course, family roasts are always available. My favourite roast is a half leg of lamb. If you ask nicely, Jason will de-bone it for you, which makes it easy to carve. If you own a dog, best you leave the bone in to maintain family harmony.

If you want to spice up your meal a range of six Beerenberg sauces adorn the counter and free-range eggs are always available.

While individual butcher shops are disappearing, the Brazen Bull survives despite competition from the supermarkets.

What a great range of produce thought the logo is a bit scary :)
