If you're not up for the mad sales rush this Boxing Day, take a detour to Caulfield Park and enter the weird and wonderful world of Boxwars for a day.

Boxwars is an epic battle where soldiers (or players) must rely only on primitive suits of armour and weapons constructed out of cardboard to fight 'til the bitter end. The bitter part is that all you have created is created to be destroyed.

This quirky-cool event originated with a group of friends building armour out of cardboard for fun and has become a popular event across Australia since it was first taken 'mainstream' in Boxwars #1 back in 2002.

Apart from the joy of destruction, one of the main goals of Boxwars is to realise the true potential of cardboard and its engineering potentials. The Boxwars Supreme Overlords (creators Hoss & Ross Koger) consider the discardment of cardboard the only good reason for war.

The theme for Boxwars #21 is Battle Bots and Robot Wars - two TV shows you never thought would help you in the real world; until now. Check out a scene from Battle Bots here or click here for a clip from Robot Wars.

So go get crafting! Grab some friends or that crazy Uncle/Aunt who likes to build weird things in the garage and come up with the most slicing, dicing, smashing, whirling, whomping, raving mad design you can. Just don't get too attached...

Materials advised for adhesives are strictly restricted to tape, hot glue and liquid nails. NO zip ties, rivets, staples, etc are allowed. Also, don't overdo it on the tape or glue - remember, your robo-themed suit is supposed to be destructible.

Outsiders who aren't up for a fight to the recycled death, or are under 18 can take part in Boxwars as spectators and cheer on the warriors.

Official Rules of Boxwars:

The Official Boxwars after party will be organised on the day of the event.
