Shopping is hard work – and even more so on the busiest day of the retail calendar: Boxing Day. If you've decided to give the cricket a flick and head to one of Melbourne's many shopping centres to snatch some lucky bargains, you've got a long day ahead of you. One can't expect to make tough decisions such as 'red or black?' on an empty stomach so here are some eateries that are open on Boxing Day so you can refuel before (or after) you shop, shop, shop.

1. Tank Fish and Chippery: known as one of Melbourne's best fish and chip shop, Tank has a branch at Emporium Melbourne, which is home to 225 stores including Australia's first Uniqlo. After you've explored Emporium's selection of Australian and international designer stores, it's up to head up to the level three food court to treat yourself to lunch. All of Tank's fish arrive fresh from Australian and New Zealand waters each day and are cooked to order.
Address: Emporium Melbourne, 287 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne 3000

2. Secret Kitchen: if you have massive cravings for yum cha, Secret Kitchen is your best beat for an epic dumpling feast if you've spent your morning at Westfield Shoppingtown in Doncaster. Dump your bags on the floor and watch a possession of trolleys roll by your table, allowing your eyes to take in the steaming baskets of freshly prepared dim sum, fried treats and rice noodle rolls.

3. Café Amba: if you're planning to hit the boutiques on Chapel Street, Café Amba should be your go-to for coffee, brunch and everything in between. Café Amba will open from 7:30am on Boxing Day so you can come in and enjoy a freshly brewed macchiato and something from the all-day menu (goats cheese herb omelette, perhaps?) before you return to the all-important task of dress shopping.
Address: 497 Chapel Street, South Yarra 3141

4. Platform 3: Box Hill is a major transport hub in the eastern suburbs, connecting residents to various shopping precincts such as Chadstone, Southland, Forest Hill, Westfield Doncaster and Camberwell Junction. Thus, it makes sense for all-day eatery Platform 3 to open for business on Boxing Day. While you're waiting for your bus, train or tram, be sure to pop in for a latte or something to eat – maybe a sandwich from the counter or their much-loved Purple Stack (hotcakes with berry compote, gingerbread crumbs, honeycomb and lavender ice cream).
Address: 48/1 Main Street, Box Hill 3128

5. Nhu Lan: if you're heading to Highpoint, Footscray's bustling Hopkins Street is where you should go on the way for a cheap and cheerful Vietnamese breakfast or lunch. If you're in a hurry, you should grab a banh mi (Vietnamese pork roll) from Nhu Lan to take away. For only $5, you get a freshly baked white baguette filled with fresh coriander, spring roll, pickled daikon and carrots, and a selection of cold cuts. Too good.
Address: 116 Hopkins Street, Footscray 3011%%
