Growing from the waste products from his studio, this artwork was the beginning that influenced and completely reshaped how Foote practiced as an artist as well as his ideas and concept that form his artworks. Originally starting in 2006 as 'Shoeboxes of denied desires' his awareness grew about how much he consumed, produced and the amount of waste he created as he worked. This brought a whole new light about how he worked and led to harder questions about the role of contemporary art today in a world facing finite resources, global warming, increasing population growth and instability. This exhibition captures this reflection and changes of reducing and reusing as much of the physical waste that came out of his studio.
Over 8 years in the making, viewers can expect to see a range of sculpture installation pieces to a series of wall mounted artworks that sit somewhere between sculpture, print and painting with light. Born in Melbourne and having studied at the Victorian College of the Arts, Ryan completed his Bachelor of Fine Art and majored in Sculpture and Spatial Practices in 2005, and then Honours in 2006. He has had many exhibitions in Australia and overseas, creating large installations in places like Federation Square, the GPO building, Flinders Lane Gallery and Platform Artist Space to name a few. He has immersed himself in so many other projects and is a man of many talents. He went on to lecture in sculpture where he studied till 2010 and undertook guest lecturing roles in other universities. A creative consultant for artist, designers, galleries, organisations and companies, after his return to Melbourne in 2012 from living abroad, he set up a social enterprise aimed at helping the creative industry implement more sustainable practices. Dark Horse Experiment is a contemporary art gallery that opened its doors in 2008 (then known as Michael Koro Galleries) in the Melbourne CBD and is in essence a research gallery. They have a clear determination to maintain the experimental aspect in every exhibition and anything goes. Their aim is to show the most contemporary research in any medium and it seems they are the perfect platform for artist Ryan Foote's exhibition. If you would like to exhibit your art at this gallery yourself, you will need to be familiar with the aesthetic of the gallery and be in a position to justify your art work in the context of that aesthetic. Contact them on email@example.com or on (03) 9328 5556. The Gallery Managing Director is Adrian Doyle.
